FROM ROOTSWEB.COM - DOCK KIMBALL TREE Benjamin
youngest child of Benjamin and Elizabeth Barnes was only two weeks old when his father died in 1878.
His mother raised her young family by farming and running a dry goods and feed store. Her widowed
mother May Ann Ellisor was living with her in the 1880 census. Benjamin married Ella Bay Ozier on 12-6
-1900 at the home of her uncle J N Ozier. Ben and Ella raised thier 5 children in the Pine Level Community
and Ella taught the Adult Sunday School Class of the Pine Level Methodist Church until Ben died in 1947.
After Ben's death Ella moved to Montgomery and lived on Plum ST. Her brother Marvin lived one block
away on Cherry St, Ella attended the Forest Ave. Methodist Church.
Benjamin was a farmer, took
produce to Montgomery for sale and ran a store also raised cattle. He was a tall man with large ears.
He carried a coin purse instead of a wallet, liked sugar on his tomatoes and always read the Bible
every night before going to bed.
Ben and Ella had a large frame house with a long hallway down
the middle. Their furniture was wicker in the parlor which included a hugh harpsocord piano. The front
porch ran the width of the house and had two porch swings. No grass was allowed to grow in the yard
and yards had to be swept with a stick broom in the same direction every Saturday. There was a brick
wall approx. 3 feet high around the front yard. The road leading from their house to US 231 is BARNES
ROAD.
