age. Silver's 5 and 10 cent store later became H.L Green's, which probably went out of business in the
1960's. After leaving Silver's and in about 1947 she went to work for the State of Alabama, Department

would she have dreamed, that 24 years later her son Steve, would work for the same Department, and retire
from there in 1998. Mary took a break from working for about ten years, in order to provide for her
children, and then started back to work as intermittently for the United Appeal, until she accepted
an offer to be the private secretary or assistant to the Montgomery Public Affairs Commissioner, L.
B. Sullivan in about 1966. Mother worked for Commissioner Sullivan for about 3 years. After Commissioner
Sullivan was defeated in an election, she went to work as the private secretary or assistant to Montgomery
Public Works Commissioner Cliff Evans, where she worked until about 1972. After this job, she worked
for a group of State Farm Insurance Agents, including Don Payne, Cliff Holman, and Bill Strickland,
for about a year. After her husband Walter Carl Newberry passed away she married Rudolph Eiland and
they moved to Sebring, Florida in about 1975 where she worked for about twelve years for Highlands County,
Florida as a bookkeeper and an assistant in the payroll section for about four years and later as a
secretary to Cecil Skipper, who was the Administrative Assistant to the Highlands County, Florida County
