Living in Rhode Island with one child in 1802, moved to NY where he
is listed on the 1810 census with two daughters and two sons under
ten years old, then during the War of 1812 moved somewhere on the
Monongahelia River in VA. In 1815 they came by flatboat down the OH
River to Pt Pleasant WV where they stayed for three weeks, then up
the Kanawha River to Eighteen Mile Creek, and settled fifteen miles
up the creek above Oldakers Mill in 1816, among the first settlers
on Putnam Co WV. He is on the 1850 Mason Co WV census. After Roxey
died Jonathan, and maybe one of his sons says one descendant, went
west to Killbourn IA and then to Corydon IA

Came to Jackson Co WV with his parents. Settled in the area of
Rockcastle WV on "Chestnut Orchard" but is on 1850 Mason Co WV
census. Family tradition says one day he got upset with his
family and tried to carve a home into a rock cliff overlooking
Thirteen Mile Creek, and hence the name Rockcastle came to be

It is said that he built a brick house near Leon WV between
Broadway and the Wolf Valley Church. He is recorded in the
census records as being a farmer. It is believed that he is
buried in the Hill Cem across Mudlick Creek, another family
story has him going to CA during the 1849 Gold Rush

Amanda's birthplace is unknown, one source says b. VA, another
says Jackson Co WV, 1850 Mason Co WV census has her b. in OH.
In the Family Bible of William McClain and Martha Graves of
Nelson Co VA are two Amanda McClain, one b. Feb 14 1834 and
the other b. Jul 6 1866. The Amanda b. Feb 14, d. Apr 22 1894

him as a Corporal beginning in Nov 1863, came out of the
army 1865 on a medical discharge. Charles and Sarah lived
in Mason Co WV, he was divorced from Sarah on Dec 21 1887,
him plaintiff, the court found the charge of abandonment
fully proven, Sarah raised the children
