In his will dated 8 Feb. 1590(1?), proved 6 Apr. 1591, Thomas Chittenden of Hawkhurst, weaver, mentioned wife Margaret (to be executrix), eldest son Thomas Chittenden, and sons William, Edmund, and Robert Chittenden. No daughters were mentioned. Son William was bequeathed the mansion house in Hawkhurst.
The will of Thomas Chittenden, broadweaver, of Hawkhurst, dated 8 February 1608/9, directs that his body be buried in the churchyard at Hawkhurst and names eldest son Thomas Chittenden and son John Chittenden, daughter Hanna Chittenden, son William Chittenden, daughter Mercy Chittenden, and wife Margaret (to be executrix).
As wills of Hawkhurst Chittendens show, most of the men were weavers or clothiers. Thomas Chittenden left looms to his sons Thomas and John, as follows, but not to William. I give & bequeath to Thomas Chittend my eldest sonne one broade loome tha standeth next to the oast and the halfe of all the Implement(e)s or tacklings to the two loomes to be delyvered to him ymmediately after my decease....to John Chittenden my sonne the other broadloom and the other halfe of the said Implement(e)s or tackling(e)s belonging to the said bequeathed looms to be delyu(er)ed by my Executrix.

The will names cousins John (eldest), Edward, Nathaniel and Thomas Chittenden, sons of brother William Chittenden, cousin William Chittenden "which is in New England", and his children John and Thomas; sister Hanna Tailer, wife of Edward and their daughter Sara wife of Thomas Batcheler; and John, Harbert, George, and Thomas Nokes, sons of Harbert Nokes, Thomas being the eldest. Brother-in-law Edward Tailer was to be executor.

[13100] According to Earnest Flagg's Genealogical Notes, William was the son of Robert Chittenden of Marden, near Cransbrook, co. Kent, ENG, where the family had lived for generations. Latest research (2006) proves that William was the son of William Chittenden of Hawkhurst, Kent, ENG.
Hawkhurst Parish baptismal records show: 17 July 1608 - Wyllyam sonne of William Chittenden the younger
William Chittenden came to New England in 1639 with his family, perhaps with the Rev. Henry Whitfield, as their wives were first cousins. The Whitfield group landed at New Haven in 1639 and proceeded to make arrangements for settling at Guilford. William Chittenden and Abraham Cruttenden were among those who signed a covenant on board ship in June 1639. On 29 September 1639 William Chittenden and others signed an agreement to purchase the lands called Menunkatuck.
died at Guilford, CT by 24 October 1660 when his inventory was presented in the Guilford court.
Widow married in 1665, Abraham Cruttenden.
