Riel/Dumont- Battle of Duck Lake-
March, 1885
In March of ‘85 Riel and Dumont
arrived
The Hillyard Mitchell’s store
meant supplies
NWMP outsmarted by Cree and Metis skill
Contend with wind, snow and winter
chill.
The next day these same men met again
Selected men to negotiate free of blame
Tempers and shots; Isidore Dumont dead
The NWMP orders- “Attack! Forge
ahead!”
Charging in deep snow and Metis snipers
Crozier’s men flounder then
decipher.
Open country left many of them dead.
Riel then said, “No further
bloodshed.”
