"O my God, preserve me from the ill fortune of going over to the United States. Let the United States protect us indirectly, spontansously through a disposition of Your holy providence, but never through a direct undertaking nor by any treaty on our part.

I lived wretchedly in the United States, among serpents, in the midst of venemous vipers. I was so surrounded by them that wherver I wished to tread, I saw them writhing. the ground was swarming with them. The United States is a Hell for an honest man. A respectable family finds no favor there, is made an object of ridicule, is scoffed at. O, what great misfortune it is to be forced to seek refuge in the United States.

O my God, for the love of Jesus, Mary, Joseph and Saint John The Batptist, grant me the grace soon and very quickly to arrive a a good arrangement, a good understanding with the Dominion of Canaada. O, in Your mercy, dispose all things in order that it may be so. Guide me. Help me. So that I may secure for the Metis and for the Indians all the benefits which can now be possibly obtained through negotiation. "

April 29, 1885. Louis Riel Diary.
