Regularly Scheduled Meetings

We have three regular meetings each month, the Computer Interest Group, the CVGS General Monthly meeting and Genealogy Tools. The Computer Interest Group covers topics of interest to genealogists who use computers. The General Meeting usually has a speaker covering a topic of general interest to genealogists. Genealogy Tools covers the methodology of genealogy.

The Computer Interest Group meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Newbury Park Library meeting room. This time change is necessary since the library changed its hours. We now have to have the chairs all put away by 7:55 p.m. -- an hour earlier.

Genealogy Tools is held on the third Tuesday of the month from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. just before the General Meeting. The location is the same – the Marvin E. Smith Community Room. The Workshop usually focuses on a specific topic such as getting started, library research, cemetery research, etc. or is conducted as a roundtable discussion of questions, methods, etc.

The General CVGS Monthly meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month from 6:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. at the Grant R. Brimhall (Thousand Oaks) Library in the Marvin E. Smith Community Room. Announcements and chairman's reports are given first. Then the main program/speaker starts about 7:15. Come early and socialize, enjoy the refreshments and look at our book sale items before the meeting. For a list of the books typically available for sale, check our Books page.

Presented by: Judy Janes

Newspapers have been published in the United States of America for over 300 years. Digital online newspapers now provide a powerful tool to discover incredible details about our ancestors lives that no other historical resource can. While genealogists most commonly seek such items as births, marriages and deaths, newspapers also recorded social events, real estate transactions, probate court and legal notices, travel, lost animals and all of the other important events that took place in our ancestors day-to-day lives.

Each online digital newspaper collection requires a different search technique. Come learn how to find online collections, and the tips and tricks needed to make a search for your ancestors successful.

Judy Janes is past President of the Ventura County Genealogical Society where she still serves on the Executive Board. Judy is a third-generation Californian who has traced her family extensively through New York, New England, the South and California. She has used newspapers extensively in her genealogical research and has been richly rewarded.
