"He married first in Feb 1828 Sallie Maria Martin, the daughter of Jesse Martin.  Sallie died in Feb 1833.  There were no children to this marriage.  John married 4 Feb. 1835 Lydia Phipps, the daughter of John Crosby and Rebecca (Burnett) Phipps.  Lydia was born 2 Aug. 1817 in Smithfield, Ohio, where her father had a tanyard.  John was baptized in the Disciple Church in Portland, Ohio, in 1834.  In November or December of 1838 he moved to Smithfield, Ohio where he lived with his father-in-law.  John was a tanner and worked at his occupation well into the 1880's.  He was a Republican and an active member o the party.  He was elected Mayor of Smithfield.  John served his community as Justice of the Peace and was called "Squire" White.  He was 5 feet 10 inches tall.  He had a very light complexion and blue eyes.  During their last years, John and Lydia lived with their son Will in Mr. Pleasant, Ohio.  John died 15 May 1892 and Lydia died 15 Dec. 1901 in their son Will's home.  They were both buried in My Pleasant Cemetery in Jefferson Co., Ohio.  Their children were born in the old homestead in Smithfield, Ohio."
