Doniphan County is located in the northeastern corner of Kansas, right on the border with Missouri. The county seat is Troy, and largest city is Wathena. An original county, Doniphan was established as a county in the Kansas Territory in 1855. Named for Colonel Alexander W. Doniphan, a veteran of the Mexican-American war and supporter of pro-slavery for Kansas. Donipah county is bordered on the north by Holt County, Missouri; the northeast and southeast by Andrew and Buchanan counties, Missouri; Atchison County (Kansas) to the south; Brown County to the west; and Richardson County, Nebraska to the northwest.
