1957 in Oconto, Oconto County WI at age 101.
General Notes: Michael Ziereis came to the United
States on the ship called Hohenstaufen embarking from Bremen and arriving at
Castle Garden on 3 Jun 1883. His occupation was listed as a Baker, and was 28
years old.
He came to Oconto County WI and in his younger years he was a logger, later he
worked in the camps as "cookie" which was the person who gathered the water and
wood, who started the fires and got the stoves going, the prep cook, coffee on
and waking the men. He was also responsible to take the lunch's out to the men
in the woods. Other duties included the mending of clothes or socks for a small
fee if the logger had no other means to get them repaired.
Mike never homesteaded any land of his own that was known. He lived in the
Oconto Hotel for over 18 years and in later years with the George Frewerd family
in Oconto. It seems most of his life was spent in the logging camps. Knowing a
little about the area in Germany he came from, tree's were never cut down and
homes were not built of wood. So to have this occupation and thinking of all the
virgin trees that were felled in Oconto County, he was like a little kid in a
candy store.

Meet the Man Called State's Oldest Logger
Mike Ziereis, 101, got Legislative Honor, Cake and Presents on his Birthday
Oconto, Wis. - Everybody, including members of the state legislature, believes
that Mike Ziereis of this city is Wisconsin's oldest living lumberjack. He is,
at any rate, a week older than 101 and the state is challenged to produce
another logger of his maturity.
Ziereis was visited the other day at the home of Mrs. George Freward in Oconto.
She is a widow and old friend who has taken him in as a boarder. The late Mr.
Freward was a tavern keeper and the old woodsman was a special sort of customer.
For many years, when little was stirring in the Holt Lumber camps, the old timer
would return to Oconto and divide his time between the Freward oasis and the
home.
The reporter's call was timely because Senator Reuben LaFave (Rep., Oconto) had
just put through a joint resolution at Madison setting forth the Ziereis record
as logger, cook and watchman, The good humored centenarian was saluted as a
champion and the state officially joined in congratulating him on his 101st
birthday.
Lost Glasses Not Replaced
All of this, to be sure, was lost on the little old man who waits for the final
call of "Timber!". He lost his glasses nine years ago and has found nothing to
replace them. He is also very deaf and apparently never quite understood Mrs.
Freward's explanation of the honor that had come to him.
Anyway, the old logger was born in Bavaria, Feb. 2, 1856. He came to this
country at the age of 38 and almost at once made Oconto his home .He got a job
in the woods and from then on shuttled back and forth until his eyes began to
fail and he could no longer serve even as a watchman.
"My husband took care of him quite a while," Mrs. Freward related, " but finally
he got his old age pension from the state and now he pays for his keep. He even
has a little money left over and out of that he can buy his clothes. Mostly he
needs pants and shoes.
Keeps Patching His Pants
"It's a funny thing, the way he keeps patching his pants. Like as not, they
don't need it, but up there in the woods he used to do his own sewing and it's a
habit with him. He puts on a patch, then rips it off, and his pants wear out
that way much faster than they should."
The woodsman threads his own needles and has a clever little trick for doing it.
He pulls the thread through beeswax until it is as stiff as buckram and then he
can slip it through the eye of the needle, which is, it happens, a darning
needle.
The old timer has teeth but he carries them in a pocket and when the meat on the
table is tender enough there are no problems, Mrs. Freward confides. The boarder
has a good appetite, His breakfast, for example, consists of a big bowl of
cereal, a doughnut, bread both toasted and untoasted - and coffee. He drinks tea
at noon and with is supper. He is especially fond of vegetable soup.
Sleeps a Great Deal
"Mike sleeps a great deal," his landlady said. "He gets up in the morning - oh
yes he dresses himself - and has his breakfast. Then he sits in his chair by the
window until lunch time, He takes a nap from 12:30 until 2:30 in the afternoon.
He gets supper early and pretty soon after that goes to bed."
Mrs. Freward confesses that she has little idea of what the old man thinks about
as he blinks at the outdoors through the south window which is now his station.
However, he is fully aware, se says, of his approaching birthday and looked
forward to the visit of father Earl Barcone who came on the big day to give him
communion. Mike's rosary, Mrs. Freward added is always................. Ziereis

Oldest Resident Dies; Saturday Rites for Ziereis
Death claimed Oconto county's oldest resident Thursday morning. He was Mike
Ziereis, 311 Second Street, who was 101 years old Febuary 2. Death came
unexpectedly after he had arisen as usual.
Mr. Ziereis was born in Bavaria, Germany, February 2, 1856. He came to this
country at the age of 38 (Researcher note; he was 28) and settled in Oconto
County. For many years he was employed in the woods by the Holt Lumber company,
as a lumberjack, later as a cookee, and in later years as a watchman.
He never married. He became a naturalized citizen in the United States June 11,
1921.
In recent years he made his home with Mrs. George Freward Sr., who told the
reporter on the occasion of his 100th birthday that he might still be spading
the garden but for the fact he had lost his glasses when he was 92 and never had
them replaced. Actually his sight was nearly gone and he had difficulty in
walking. He always did his own patching and would pass away his time doing odd
sewing, guided mostly by touch rather then sight.
Resolutions honoring him as one of Wisconsin's oldest residents on his birthday
the past two years were submitted to the state legislature by Senator Rueben
LaFave.
The body was taken to the Sheffield Funeral home where services were conducted
Saturday morning at 8:30 followed by rites at St. Joseph church at 9:00. The
Reverend Robert Klien officiated and burial was in the Catholic cemetery. The
rosary was recited Friday evening at the funeral home.
Pallbearers were Robert Frewerd, Fran Loberger, George Frewerd, Sgt. G. W.
Frewerd, Charles Peterson and George Perdzock.
Survivors are two nieces, Mrs. Ray Wochinski of New London and Mrs. Christ
Quandt of Suring, and four nephews, Mike and Joseph Ziereis of Suring, George
Ziereis of Sturgeon Bay and Edward Ziereis of Clintonville.

General Notes: Joe immigrated in the year of 1885
on the ship S. S. Bohemian, embarking April 2, 1885 from Hamburg, Germany, and
arriving April 18, 1885, in New York. In reality a short journey of only 16
days. Most trips of those days were up to and beyond 6 weeks. Joe was following
his brother Mike who had come a couple of years earlier. He made his way to
Oconto Co. Wisconsin, where Mike had already settled.
Joe and his brother engaged in logging, something he would do for most of his
life besides farming. For them, this was a better life then what they had in
Germany, as the farms were left to the oldest son, so they had to move on.
Joe met Christina Johnson while working for Jacob Spies.

Town Of Armstrong, Oconto County, Wisconsin, died on 11 May 1990 in Embarrass,
WI6
at age 93, and was buried in Union Free Cemetery, Breed, WI.
General Notes: George never married.
He enlisted to serve in WW1 but was sent home due to poor eye sight. He logged
with his family for many years and then moved to Sturgeon Bay and worked in the
ship yards. He worked for Meant and Peterson's in Sturgeon Bay.
When George retired he lived with Richard and Agnes Ziereis in Embarrass for
several years. He helped Rich in the Body Shop and tended to a very large garden
which helped feed the 3 adults and seven children.
The Snake Slayer
As a small girl I loved to climb a certain pine tree in the woods in the back of
our home. One evening after supper I did just that climbing as high as I could
until I came face to face with a big old pine snake, him staring me right in the
face. I almost immediately drop to the ground and although a bit banged up found
Uncle George and told him about this huge snake, to me it was big enough to
swallow me whole.
Uncle George looked for that snake for many weeks and had seen it was going
through the garden and it was leaving a large trail. One day he did catch it in
the garden and it took several blows to kill it. It was as long as he was tall.
George hated snakes which I had always thought most people did not like them.
It came to light years later when he was living in the old homestead at Anderson
Lake and I was also living there with my 3 children after a divorce.
My daughter Shannon feared no animal, and was always collecting and dragging
them home. One day she came in with a pail of grass snakes. Uncle George who
never raised his voice yelled at her to get them out of the house and to dump
them way back in the field. Well, Shannon did as she was told a bit upset. Later
that day Uncle George told her a story of something that happened when he was
young. A little boy was put to bed one night and kept yelling something was
picking him. His parents checked his bed and found nothing and this went on
until he fell asleep. The next morning he was dead. There was a snake inside his
quilt that must have crawled in through a small hole. True story and a very
frightening one at that.
George always made a large garden, to large for the 4 of us so we were always
giving away fresh vegetables. This goes with the old adage when zuchinni is ripe
lock your doors! He was a meat and potato person and his potato patch took up
over half the garden. He had potato's sometimes 3 meals a day. If I was not
boiling a pot a day he would do it himself. He had a special way of doing his
potato's so they were nice and firm for his favorite, fried.
When the new highway 32 went through the middle of the land of the homestead he
was very upset about it and protested them cutting down a 200 year old White
Oak. With many confrontations with the construction company he finally gave in,
but he made his garden right to the edge of the line marking his property and
with hoe in hand he was out there every day making sure the bull dozers and work
men did not cross that line or disturb his potato patch. It was a funny site,
they would wave at him standing there and he shaking that hoe protecting what
was his.
George eventually in old age could no longer drive and he was brought back to
Embarrass to live in an apartment where we could keep an eye on him. His
favorite pass time was sitting by the front window, fly swatter in hand waving
at the cars going by.
