October 14, 2006 Interest Group Mtg Report:

Greetings!

Another great informative meeting! I did sell all the garnets, they are going to be great Christmas presents that help keep our heritage alive!

Many thanks to Rose Gresser and Mara Pitkethly for bringing warm coffee cakes that were warm and fresh from the oven. Yum! Gladys brought nutritious nuts to round off the treat selection.

We discussed the November 11 potluck strategy. About November first I will send out an email asking for what dish you will bring ( to have enough warming trays) and asking to let me know if you can bring a warming tray or anything else that I can think of to make this gathering successful! Be thinking what you can bring. I have the mixes for knedliky, will make those up. Please copy off the recipe for your dish to share at the potluck.

Jo Herber reported on the October EGS meeting, Lorraine McConaghy the historian from the Museum of History and industry was the speaker. Here are two websites she shared:

www.libdex.com - links to online library catalouges worldwide

www.oclc.org - Library of Congress Catalouge

Jo also returned from a trip to Eastern Europe and successfully got DNA samples from perspective relatives. We all are keeping our fingers crossed for you, Jo! These folks are from a small village with the same surname BUT they cannot find the needed archive info to prove their relationship.

Bev Ryder is still looking for that ancestral village, she has a village name but can't find it on the map! SO! Jo had this website for her. It is : [email protected] This fellow will do a single lookup for free. You send the name of the village and he will tell you the village name history and its other history. Bev is now the family genealogist, fielding questions for other nationality research.

Mara shared information about the Reception and Fundraiser event featuring the Czech Ambassador Peter Kolar on Nov. 9th. I sent out a separate email about this. ALSO! She had a great find for folks who will be visiting NYC and want a reasonable place to stay. It is the Howard Johnson near Newark Airport...$69 a night!

So nice to have Rose Gresser tell about her trip to her ancestral village of Vlcnov in Moravia. Her daughter wanted a kroj (folk dress) from the town. All of the relatives donated one piece to make two kroje for Rose and her daughter. Rose's lovely kroj was in the Slavic Fest parade at the UW two years ago. Rose remembers the myth of garnets. They symbolize the drops of blood of fallen soldiers or holy martyrs.

Gladys brought a cute cartoon about the Czechoslovakian Wheel of Fortune. Of course it has to do with vowels. I will have copies at the Nov. meeting or check the Sept. 14 TIMES.

Martha Soltesz had this original Slovak military book of registration papers for her husband's family. Amazing what information is in there. She also had a christening certificate. This certificate was in Latin, Hungarian and Slovak. In January we will have a program on Czechoslovakia military records. Martha will bring that to share again.

Janet Roach is researching the Hrones and Schork (Sorek with a hacek over the s) names from the Prague area. Has anyone researched Prague? If so. let me know and we can get that information to Janet.

My news!! A contact at the Prague Archives found a "tidbit" for me. So then I had a " potential" relative find my ancestor's ( Josef Los ) birth record in the Literomice Regional Archives. I thought it was about 1754 but it proved to be 1758. Now I have some major translating to do!!!

NEXT MEETING: NOV. 11 NOON TO 5 PM THE THANKSGIVING POTLUCK

JANUARY 27, 9:30 TO NOON "MILITARY RECORDS

Happy researching!

Rosie
