Articles Relating to Czech-Slovak Research

Greetings!

Many thanks to Mara Pitkethly and Susan Case for bringing treats! Susan Case is a new member who is researching Harasa and Soltis in Raslavice, Lopuchov, and Bardejov in the Slovakia. Her family settled in Friedland, PA.

I reported that 11 people from WA State are attending the CGSI Genealogical/Cultural Conference in Madison,WI Oct 18 - 20. So far 185 people have signed up to attend. Jo Herber found that Midwest Airlines flies nonstop to Madison or Milwaukee with the best airfares. Jo and Bev Ryder will be attending the conference. Jo could not attend the meeting but reported she is slowly working her way thru the interlibrary loan Denni Hlasatel newspapers. She has found some ancestral villages! Yeah!

Visa requirement for visiting Czechs will soon be eliminated, that is good news if you will be having relatives come to visit. I just read that in the newspapers. I know many Czech-Americans have been pushing for this.

Jill Stransky, another new member, brought two exchange students from Karlovy Vary to meet us. They will be attending high school the whole school year in Seattle. Filip Meinelt has a host home but Karolina Travnicka needs a host home soon. We hope someone out there in our group knows someone who can provide a host home for Karolina.

Dodo Ivaska also visited us. He won a green card in a lottery, lucky guy! So he has been in Seattle for a couple weeks now and is looking for work as a singer. He has auditioned with the Seattle Opera but there are not any openings. Maybe some one reading this can find some opportunity for Dodo. Email him at: Dodo Ivaska Dodo was just in Nebraska at the Wilbur Czech Days Festival singing with his dad, Josef Ivask.

Susan Case told us about her trip to Slovakia this summer. She took an intensive Slovak language course through Comenius University of Bratislava. www.ujop.sk/ The classes and cultural activities were motivating. She went to Presov to meet researcher Milan Belej, whose name she found thru Paul Matousky of CGSI. I was especially interested in the kind of maps they found. Mara Pitkethly met Susan thru a mutual Slovak friend, how is that for networking? Susan shared her albums and stories with us.

Collie Liska attended the FEETH course in Salt Lake City and got some great information on researching and his family. It is amazing how much Collie has done since first joining our group.

Diana Lapsa needs help with cemetery research, Martha Soltezs had problems with that, too.

Julie and Allan Peschek will be attending the CGSI Conference in WI but will also be researching on the rest of their trip all the way to Washington DC.

Bev Ryder is getting ready to be in charge of nametags for the April CGSI Symposium here in the Seattle area. Diana Lapsa and Barb Callahan volunteered to work at the April Symposium travelling library April 11th. We are pleased that Leo Baca will do two presentations, the LDS Eastern European specialist will do two presentations, Felix James from UW will do two Slovak presentations, Daniela from Portland will do a cultural presentation on on dyeing eggs, Jara Soldanova will do a Czech language class, Chuck Kusak from Seattle will give a glass presentation and there will be one more Slovak presentation. And of course Cindi Howell from Cindi's List is our keynote speaker.

NEXT MEETINGS; OCT.27 AND NOV.17TH--1 PM TO 4:30. SAME PLACE.

HAPPY RESEARCHING!!

ROSIE
