Greetings!

A BIG WELCOME to new attendee Rochelle Plenkovich from Bellingham, WA who is just starting to research SIROVY AND SHIMITX or SHIMIC. Rochelle received much help from the group to get her started!!!!

We also extend a big welcome to Jacqui Buresh who is researching BURESH, BAROT, and ZAMISTIL from the Cedar Rapids, IA area! Jacqui has done some researching already but is still looking for more information.

It was so nice to have Nick Whitfield back with his bag of freebies and helpful hints..plus I appreciated his mending job of our big bulletin board that holds our Czechoslovakia map. It was falling apart!

Also a big welcome to Michelle Kozy who came with her mom Mary to see the kroj displays. I brought mine from Kyjov and, as a bonus, I brought a LOVELY vest from Velky Nad Velickou that was purchased at an antique store in Cedar Rapids, IA, which in turn I sold to Mary Klander, because her mom's family was from there.

I reported on my trip to the Cedar Rapids Museum's kroj exhibit loaned my Helene Cincebeaux. Overwhelming! The collection of ladies wedding headdresses was lovely! Men's costumes, too. I enjoyed the on loan paintings by Josef Uprka. This exhibit is there thru October 12, ending with the CGSI mini-conference. Also spectacular was the Bily Clock Museum in nearby Spillville, IA. Henry Ford offered one million dollars for one of the hand carved clock masterpieces and the Bily brothers turned him down!!

Bob and Gladys Shipek brought a framed piece of delicate handwork upon which we had quite a discussion to what kind of handiwork it is!

After being cultured, we discussed dating photographs and much more. Martha, Eric, and Jacqui brought books on the subject. I had read one of those books so we could learn the history of photographs. I also had information dating the picture postcards by the logos, etc. Next time I will have that handout for you, plus one on dating the fashions in the the old countries from 1860 to 1925. Julie Peschek had a wonderful old photograph to share. Eric Taylor had photographs he wanted us to discuss and date.

This was so productive we decided to work with old photos next time, too. We will discuss preserving old photos, too. After the meeting Mike V said we should scan these pictures onto a CD. So we can discuss that more. SO BRING OLD PHOTOS NEXT TIME!!

NEXT MEETINGS!! SEPTEMBER 21 2002, NOVEMBER 16 2002, JANUARY 25 2003!!!!!!!!

NEW ACQUISITIONS! Chicago Group's SURNAME INDEX III, SOUPIS books for the CHRUDIMSKO Region which is on NE Bohemia (a 1631 listing by names). I found my Kure, Kubes and Kopecky surnames!

CGSI is having a mini-conference Oct 11-12 in Cedar Rapids, IA. http://www.cgsi.org

Happy Researching, Rosie
