The Conatser Family Enroote To California Stopped In County

Six sons of Daniel Conatser of Jasper Tennessee started to North Carolina, but instead they decided to go to California.  They were John Albert, William, James, Dan, Alex and Frank Conatser and the summer before the Civil War, while on the journey west, some of the party decided to abandon the trip to California and John Albert Settled in Arkansas and James Harvey Conatser and his wife Mary Ann Easley Conatser settled in Palo Pinto County rearing two sons, Tom and William, and a daughter, Easter.  Tom married Elmer Ragsdale and had a son and a daughter, Delia, who married C. R. Estill.  The Estills have a son, Virgil and a daughter, Eula May (Mrs. Earl Akins).  Easter Conatser married Jim Lewis and reared a family of five children, most of whom live in Oklahoma.  James Harvey Conatser died in Palo Pinto in 1883.

William Spear Conatser married Sarah Jane Coyle in Palo Pinto in 1882 and they were married by Mr. Conatser's father as he was County Judge at that time.  Children of this couple were sons, James Harvey, Claude, Horace and Charles W., and a daughter Posie, who married J. Lloyd Byron.

William Spear Conatser had the first telephone office in Palo Pinto, owned a general store and worked in an abstract office for Mr. Bradford, later buying the abstract business which he operated with George Metcalf for several years.

Of these children, two, Horace and Claude, are dead.  Charles William married Bessie Marie Dalton, daughter of General Lee and Lavinia Tennyson Dalton, and they live in Palo Pinto, having operated the Palo Pinto Abstract Company for a number of years.

The Byrons were the parents of 5 children:  W. I., who married Juanita Hughes, lives in Austin and has a daughter, Linda Kay; J. Lloyd, Jr., married Etta Wright and they have 2 children, James L. III and Jay; Velmatine, who married Jack (Chester) Williams and has two daughters, Jimmye and Jacqueline; and Lola, who married C. L. Hodgkins and has 2 children, C. L., Jr., and Pennie Marie.  The other daughter, Carahminta, died in infancy.  J. Lloyd and Lola are twins.

Charles Harvey Conatser married Velma Haynie and one of their sons, William Harvey is a weather observer for the Government Air Service at Anchorage, Alaska, the other, Charles Neal is a Commander in the U. S. Navy and stationed in Florida.
