PIONEER PASSES
MONDAY MORNING
DEATH COMES SUDDENLY TO
MRS. ALEXANDER THOMPSON
WHILE BREAKFAST WAS BEING
PREPARED -- RESIDED IN MEAFORD
SOME 73 YEARS AND OCCUPIED
SAME HOUSE SINCE HER MARRIAGE
IN 1860
MEAFORD EXPRESS (Mar. 1929) - The sudden death of one of Meaford's pioneer mothers took place on Monday morning in the person of Isabelle Milne, wife of the late Alexander Thompson, at the advanced age of 87 years. Deceased enjoyed fairly good health and was able to be about until a few days ago, and her passing was quite unexpected at this time.
Born in Elgin, Scotland, deceased came to Canada with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Milne, in 1856, and settled in Meaford. In 1860 she was married to the late Alexander Thompson, who predeceased her some 25 years ago. In those days the Milnes were among the early settlers on Collingwood Street and erected the house now occupied by Mr. W.H. Brown and family. Upon their marriage some 69 years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Thompson took up their residence in the same house in which she died, thus was the subject of the sketch familiar with the early history of Meaford. Deceased was the mother of eleven children, all of whom predeceased her, except one son, Edward Blake Thompson, of Toronto.
The late Mrs. Thompson was a member of Erskine Presbyterian Church and was active in church work all her life. She was a woman of sterling character and was one of Meaford's most esteemed citizens during her long residence here and her death is deeply regretted by a large circle of friends.
Besides her son deceased is survived by one sister and two brothers, Mrs. J.L. Miekle, Port Arthur; Robert Milne, of Los Angeles, and Dr. Geo. L. Milne, Victoria, B.C.
The funeral was held from her late residence yesterday afternoon to Lakeview Cemetery. Service was conducted by Rev. J.R. Morden and was attended by many sympathizing friends.
