LATE JANET NELSON
WAS 92 YEARS OLD
MEAFORD, Jan. 11, 1929 - The funeral from her late residence, William street, on Monday afternoon, January 7th, ended the life record of Janet Nelson, aged 92 years, the fifth oldest resident of Meaford, having been born in Otonabee, Peterboro County, Ontario, in 1837, thirty years before the birth of Canadian Confederation. About seventy years ago the deceased came to Meaford, where she has resided practically ever since. There were eight sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Alonzo Smith, Meaford, and Andrew Nelson, Calgary, surviving.
In 1863 Janet Nelson was married to the late Robert Stewart, a brother of Messrs. James and William Stewart, one of the pioneer families of the town.
There were three sons and two daughters; Archibald, living in Winnipeg; Mrs. Walkinshaw, Edmonton; and Mrs. Patchell, Vancouver.
Some years after the death of her first husband, the deceased was married in 1879 to Mr. John York, who is still living in Meaford at the advanced age of 94 years, his birthday being Sunday last. They had one daughter, now Mrs. Peter Davey, wife of Councillor Davey, Meaford.
The deceased was hardly ever sick, no immediate illness hastened her death, just a general wearing out of vital machinery.
The funeral service at the home was conducted by Rev. J.R. Morden, B.D., minister of Erskine United Church, Meaford, the pallbearers being Messrs. D.A. Ferguson, Peter Davey, Norman Hungerford, Fred Gilmore, Seymour Bumstead and James Smith. Interment took place to Meaford cemetery.
