DEATH OF MR. THOS. HARRIS
MEAFORD EXPRESS (1923) - Mr. Thomas Harris died at Bayview on Tuesday morning in the ninety-second years of his age. The deceased was one of Meaford's first Town Councillors after incorporation, the Council then being composed of a Mayor, a Reeve, a Deputy Reeve and nine councillors, all of whom have passed away except Mr. J.J. Johnston, of this town.
Born in Suffex, England, the late Mr. Harris came to Meaford in 1848 and, with Mr. Charles Barber, founded the Georgian Foundry in 1867. In 1883, deceased again took up farming on the Barber farm now owned by Dr. Clark, on the ridge road near Meaford. Eighteen years ago he moved to Bayview, where he lived retired until his death. The deceased was a well read man, particularly fond of conversing with his neighbors and pointing out to them the changes which he thought would tend to allay unrest in the political and industrial world and establish an equality of interest in the accumulation and distribution of the wealth.
Mr. Harris' wife predeceased him over thirty years ago. He leaves one son, Albert T. Harris, and two daughters, Miss Harris, and Mrs. Stopbellben. Mr. C. Barber of Meaford, is a half brother.
