A well known resident passed away in death Wednesday morning in the person of Mr. Samuel Egerton, ex-chief of police, aged 82 years and 3 months.
   The deceased was born in Staffordshire England on Jan 20 1820. He spent a number of years in the mounted police force and five years was Inspector of V Division Paddington. He was also on the famous Scotland Yard detective force for some time and was in receipt of a pension from the London police fund.
   At the age of 25 he married Miss Sophia French. The result of the union being three children, all of whom, together with their mother died about 40 years ago with smallpox. He never married again.
   Mr. Egerton came to Canada in 1871 settling on a farm with his father in the township of Derby. Twenty-two years ago he came to Owen Sound and was the town's first chief of police, a position he held with credit to himself and advantage to the town for about nine years, and was succeeded by the present Chief, Mr. John Mcauley.
   For ten years past up to a few months ago his niece, Miss Emma Ker, now Mrs. Jas. Sparling was his housekeeper, and during his last illness he was attended by his sister Mrs Ker of Hanover. Another sister, Mrs Jas. White of Invermay, was also at his death bed and a third sister Mrs. David Smith resides at Mackinac Mich.
   In religion he was an Anglican and in politics a staunch conservative. He also was a prominent Mason, being a member of St. George's Lodge, and his funeral this Friday afternoon will be conducted by that order. Services will be held at the house at 2:30 p.m. by Rev. Jas. Ardill, after which the Masons will take charge, and interment will be made in Greenwood Cemetery. The funeral leaving the house at 3:o'clock.
