DEATH OF ARCHIBALD BLANCHARD
MEAFORD EXPRESS (1910) - In the death of Mr. Archibald Blanchard on Monday last, St. Vincent loses another of its oldest landmarks, after a very short illness, at the advanced age of 80 years, 5 months and 12 days. Deceased was a Canadian by birth and was born in Prince Edward County in the Township of Murray, in 1830, where he remained until he was 17 years of age when he moved to St. Vincent where he resided until his demise. During his 64 years sojourn in this locality the late Mr. Blanchard has seen many ups and downs, many people come and go and many advances in every walk of life. During his early pioneer life he worked hard as a till of the soil and developed one of the hardiest constitution known to us, as he had the privilege of enjoying the best of health throughout all these years without being confined to his bed a single day. He was taken ill on Saturday and passed away on Monday morning.
Deceased was a very quiet man and was highly spoken of by his host of friends. In politics he was a Reformer and one who never failed to record his vote. He was always present at the polling booth for either municipal, provincial or Dominion elections and his absence on January 2nd was remarked by the entire neighborhood.
Deceased is survived by a widow 82 years of age (nee Sarah Jane Bowerman) who also took part and suffered her share of the privations of pioneer life. He is also survived by a family of seven children as follows: Sandford, St. Vincent; Mrs. Geo. Govette, Crosswell, Mich; Stephen, Meaford; Gideon, Port Arthur; Mrs. Herbert Smith, Hawarden, Sask., William, Battleford, Sask., and Mrs. Cronk, Michigan.
In religion Mr. Blanchard was a Disciple and always .......to live up to the Golden Rule. His enemies were few and he passed to his reward with the full assurance of a man who had done his duty. The funeral took place on Wednesday last to Meaford Cemetery and was largely attended, Evangelist W. F. Neal officiating.
