AGED COUPLE ARE PARTED BY DEATH (1922)
MEAFORD NONOGENARIAN WAS
OVER 71 YEARS MARRIED AND
RESIDED IN MEAFORD FOR
61 YEARS
By the death of Mrs. S.F. Bebee at seven o'clock on Sunday evening Meaford loses one of its oldest and most respected residents and a link of seventy-one years of wedded life is severed. Mrs. Bebee had been unconscious for nearly a week, and her death was not entirely unexpected. Her condition prevented any outward observance of the seventy-first anniversary of her marriage on Friday last, and the numerous friends who called on the aged couple found the occasion one for extending sympathy instead of congratulations.
The deceased, whose name before marriage was Tryphosa Woods, was the daughter of George and Sabre Potter, who adopted her as their child when her mother died three weeks after she was born. At the age of 19 years she was married to Mr. Bebee, of Hope Township, where they lived for five years, and where three children were born to the ........ They then moved to the United States, residing there for four years and coming to Meaford 62 years ago.
Mrs. Bebee was a member of the Methodist Church since childhood, a good neighbor and a woman of sympathetic and generous nature. Her long life was marked by kindly deeds and earnest solicitude for the happiness and welfare not only of her own family but also of all who were in less happily circumstance than she. Though living to a good old age, Mrs. Bebee was never ill for any length of time, and in a state of unconsciousness she passed peacefully to rest.
As already stated, Mrs. Bebee was born on the 15th of July, 1832. She was the mother of seven children, of whom four are living, two sons and two daughters: N.A. Bebee, of Bellingham, Washington; Miller Bebee, of Owen Sound; Mrs. Anna Bowerman, of Owen Sound; and Mrs. M.E. Smith, of Long Beach, California. Mrs. Bowerman and her brother Miller have been here for several days but the other brother and sister are not expected, as it would take them too long to make the journey.
The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon to Lakeview Cemetery. Service was conducted in the Methodist Church by Rev. Mr. Stewart and was attended by a host of sympathizing friends.
September 29th, marked the seventy-first wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. S.F. Bebee of this town who were ninety-one years old last July, both birthdays falling in the same month and they are now living in the same house that they moved into sixty-one years ago. They were married at Newtonville in the township of Clarke by the Rev. Dr. Armison, Presbyterian minister.
