99th Year -- Born Near Bolton,

MEAFORD EXPRESS (1949) -- The death of Meaford's oldest resident, Mrs. Robert Abercrombie (Isabella) occurred on Wednesday afternoon last in her 99th year. Deceased had not been in robust health for some time, but possessed a vitality known only to the pioneers and settlers of her day and generation.
The late Mrs. Abercrombie, was born in Albion Township, near Bolton, and moved to Euphrasia Township with her parents, the late Mr. & Mrs. William Taylor, at an early age. Her entire life was spent in the Fairmount and Griersville district and she was much beloved by all who knew her. After her marriage, deceased, with her husband, took up residence at Griersville, which in those early days was a thriving community, and was on the mail route to Meaford, when such came over the Old Mail Road from Williamstown, known as Heathcote, before the railroad was built from Collingwood to Meaford. The Griersville hamlet was named after the late James and Andrew Grier, and it was over those years that Mrs. Abercrombie was at her best and laid the foundation for a splendid home through hard work and diligent planning. She possessed a wonderful memory and a keen intellect and made lasting friends during her long and useful life.
Deceased was the last survivor of the own family, and her husband pre-deceased her in 1935. Two sons are left to mourn her passing; Messrs. F.E. Abercrombie, Griersville, and Stanley Abercrombie, of Meaford. Four grandchildren and three great grandchildren survive: Mrs. A. Patterson and daughter Joan, and Mrs. Sid Richardson and two daughters, on the Thornbury road, besides Jack and Doris Abercrombie of Toronto. Deceased was a cousin of Sir Lyman P. Duff, Chief Justice of Canada.
The funeral was held from the Ferguson Funeral Chapel to Lakeview Chapel on Friday afternoon. Service was conducted by Rev. A.E. Armstrong of Meaford Baptist Church. Pall bearers were Messrs. Milton, Albert and Wilbert Taylor, Newton Dean, Jesse D. Storey and Carl Rennie.
