Donald Young, Jan. 1, 2002 - COFFMAN

According to his death certificate, George Thomas COFFMAN d.2 Nov 1941 in Wauseon and was buried 6 Nov 1941 in Montpelier. Chances are that he was buried in Riverside Cemetery.  Also in the death certificate his wife was named as Fannie who survived. I would appreciate receiving any available information about her.

Benedict R Maryniak, Jan. 5, 2002 - POE, POUCHER

I've discovered that Rev John Poucher - living in West Unity from at least 1877 (and according to my research died there 7-8-1891) - was the Civil War army chaplain who served the longest term - 52 months in the 38th Ohio Infantry and then the 40th US Colored Troops. Is there any other info on him? He married Mercy Poe - a Civil War widow - in 1868 and she died at West Unity 1913. He is frequently confused with a Dr John Poucher who taught at DePauw University, who was also a methodist minister.

Shirley Baker, Jan. 12 & 16, 2002 - HARRIS, SMETZER,

I am researching my great-grandparents, John H. Harris, dob 1862 in West Unity, Williams County and Melissa Smetzer, dob 1868, West Unity, Williams County. They were married in Williams County 29 August 1889 by George (last name not legible on copy of License. He was a Justice of the Peace. If you have any information on either I would be greatly appreciative. My great-grandparents moved to Toledo where they resided at 812 Bartley Place in South Toledo until their deaths. John in 1909 and Melissa in 1954.  Unfortunately I live in Florida and only get back to Toledo once a year. My mother and aunt, both of whom are in their 80's have tried to remember as much as they can about their grandparents but because John died at such an early age, not much was known about even even by my grandfather.

I am researching my great-grandparents, John H. Harris and Melissa Smetzer. They were born in West Unity or Stryker Ohio and were married in West Unity on 29 August 1889. John died in 1909 and Melissa in 1954 both in Toledo, Ohio. They are buried in Forest Cemetery in Toledo. I ran across the 1850 census for Williams County which lists John Harris, his wife Elizabeth and their children. I wondered if one of the older sons might be John H's father, but in looking in "Jan's corner at the geneology of that John Harris, I do see a grandson by the name of John H. but when I went into his site, I found a John Hake and a different birthdate and wife. So I have hit a stone wall. I received a copy of John and Melissa's wedding license and certificate but the probate court said they had not record's of birth. I am hoping that someone in the area who has been researching John Harris might have come across John H. and Melissa. I have gone through some of the census records but can not find any Smetzer's so far. I do remember my grandfather and my great-grandmother talking about some family in Stryker Ohio when I was growing up but do not know any more than that. Any ideas you might have for where I can look next would be greatly appreciated.

Barbara Fogel, March 4, 2002 - Cooney, Ohio History

I am doing research on Cooney, a dying four corners. At first I was just going to write about the school ( taught there for 2 years, and my daughters went there, as well). But because I live in the area, and because I am sentimental about all of Cooney, I have decided to write about all of this special place. I have read The Hills of Home and the Williams County historical volumes. I plan to talk to some of the "old timers", too. But I would like to come across some printed recollections of life in Cooney, too. My best living source has been Everett Peck, member of the Williams County Historical Society.

I was inspired to write this article after realizing that the Cooney school will close down after one more year; a new school is being built (I teach at Edon). This will be the end of an era and will certainly finalize any hope of keeping Cooney alive (unless someone buys the school building).  Toni McCourt, editor of The Nettle Lake News, has agreed to publish the article for me. I do not know when I will complete the article, but I want to gather as much information as I can so I can get started. I don't have a lot of time to do a lot of running here and there, but I can do a little. If there is  anything you can tell me, please e-mail me as soon as you are able to.  Thanks.

Robert Owen J Hillard, April 1, 2002 - RESLER, SHORTHILL

I have my ggggrandfather John Resler b. 1777 in Mifflin Twp., Juniata, Pennsylvania. He died in Stryker, Willams Ohio and is buried in the old Pulaski Cemetery along with his wife Catharine (Meloy} Resler. Robert Resler's son John is buried there also. I took photos of their stones last August while I was attending the Hillard 89th Reunion in Pioneer, Ohio. I didn't know the Shorthills were there also or I would have taken pictures of them while I was there. The Mary E. is Mary Elizabeth b. 20 January 1846 in Ohio and d. 25 Dec 1846 in Bryan, Williams, Ohio; Robert A. is Robert Alexander b. 18 Sept. 1837 and d. 8 Sept. 1847 , they are Thomas Reuben Shorthill and Elizabeth Neidy's Children. The George Waldo Shorthill I believe is one Thomas Tanyhill Shorthill's Children. Thomas Tanyhill was the son of Thomas Reuben Shorthill who was b. 1801 in Ireland, his wife was Elizabeth Neidy b. 1803 in pennsylvania, daug. of William Neidy who died in 1803 and Catharine Meloy who married John Resler in 1803. I do not have Henry on my list but I am positive he is a relation. Thomas Tanyhill was married to Elizabeth Dunshee. One of the small markers may be for Jane daug. of Elizabeth & and Thomas Reuben Shorthill and a sister to Mary E., b. 23dec 1827 and d. Aug. 1841. I also have a son named Bust b. 1849, but I don't have a death date.

The Children I have listed for Thomas Tanyhill and Elizabeth are Viola b. 1859, Lillian b. 1863, & Charles b. 1865.The Henry who d. 1861, I belive is one of Thomas Tanyhill and Elizabeth's cildren also.

Jayne Maddy, April 15, 2002 - SNYDER, WILSON

Emma Jane Snyder died 8 June 1936 in Williams Co and is buried in Oakwood Cemetary in Bucyrus. [Another source said July 1936]

She was married to Clark Clemens Snyder and had 2 sons William Ray and Charles Keplinger Snyder. I believe that Emma Jane was first married to William Wilson in Shelby Co. Ohio in 1873. They had a son Thomas L. Wilson who was my great grandfather. I have not been able to find my great grandfather and am hoping that by finding his mother, I can find more information on Thomas L. Wilson. Is there someone who could find Emma Jane's obituary to find out if she was once a Wilson? Or any other information on Thomas L. Wilson?

Becky Hudson-Pye, April 24, 2002 - PHILLIPS, SCHIEBER

I'm researching my great grandmother, Alta Fay Phillips, born 1895 in Monteplier (spelling?), Williams County, OH. Her parents were Aaron Phillips and Mary White, both also born in Ohio. Alta married John Schieber and definitely had two children that I know of, Robert Schieber and Jake Fred Schieber (my grandfather). It is rumored that there were also two daughters but no one really knows for sure. I know that Alta and John moved to Muskegon, Michigan at some point because that's where my grandfather was born in 1933. Please let me know if you know of her or if any of this is familiar to you.

Agatha Davenport, May 21, 2002 - GILTNER, GISH

I was doing research on Tobias Giltner who was born about 1920 give or take, in Tompkins Co., N.Y. He owned land in Brady Township on the Tifton River, near Lockport, Ohio. I have the census records for 1850, 1860, 1870, for the Williams Co. land, nothing for 1880. In looking over this information and also stopping at the Lockport Mennonite Church I discovered that a Abraham Gish's name kept coming up and discovered that he led a group of people first from Lancaster, Pa., than to a county in Ohio the eastern part, before making his journey to the Lockport area. He apparently had bought a large section of this area of the country. I know that Abraham Gish was born in Lancaster Co., Pa. in 1801 and he died in 1884, he was married to a woman name of Eliza S. they are both buried in Floral Grove Cemetery, West Unity, Ohio. Do you have any knowledge of any history written about this trek from Pa. to Lockport, Ohio, and is there any type of list that names all the people who made the trip with him. I am going to be in Bryan this coming Friday and hopefully can glean more information, I am always unsuccessful in getting into the church at Lockport. Any information you might have concerning either Tobias Giltner, or Abraham Gish would be most helpful.

I have and I'am searching for more Info. on the German Line of "Scherman's" and "Sherman's" that lived in and around the Williams and Defiance County Ohio area, Most were from Tiffin Township. The line I'am searching are my g., g.g., & g.g.g. grandfather's John Henry Sherman born Feb. 7, 1879 in Tiffin Township and died in 1955. Johann Heinrich (John Henry) Sherman born April 11, 1824 in Wersen,  Nordrhein-Westfahlen Germany, and died March 9, 1881 in Defiance County,  Ohio. Johann Heinrich (John Henry) Scherman born in 1800 and came from Wersen, Nordrhein-Westfahlen Germany, and died in 1875 in Defiance County, Ohio, I have found records of his last name being "Schurmann" in Germany and "Schnemann" on the ships list from the Bremen Packet in 1833, But he spelled his last name as "Scherman" when he died in 1875, and my line ended up being "Sherman". Other Surnames I'am searching are Schnemann, Sherman, Stugemeyer, Ingle, Gier, Daft, Rath, McCauley, Moninger, Bohrer, Nischwitz, Clady, Just to name a few.

Robert E. Lambright, July 8, 2002 - LAMBRIGHT,GUNYAN

This is a two "John Lambright" Mystery

My name is Robert Lambright, and I have been researching my family tree. I've gotten most of the info. I need on my direct uplines, but I'm having trouble locating a death date and burial place for John Lambright b. 1820 Pa. His children were Timothy M. Lambright b. 1849 d. 1902(my upline) George W.b. 1859 d. 1925, Andrew J. b.1854 d.1890, James F. b.1857 d.1934, John b.1852 d. unknown, and Cathrine A. "Lambright" Gunyan b. 1852 d. 1897

All of his children were born in Williams County, and except John b. 1852 are buried in the Cogswell Cemetery. My grandfather Ernest who was 100 last April, said, that John b. 1852 was still alive and preaching for the Salvation Army when he was a kid. But he could not remember where they buried him or exactly when he died. Grandpa's very active and still independant so his mind is still very good. I think I'll check The Salvation Army for records on this John b. 1852. I have not hit a dead end yet ,on this John.

However, John Lambright b.1820 is another story. I've had a meeting with the Bridgewater township trustees about the original plot map for Cogswell and Richard Gardner(he did the current map) He said the W.P.A. took it and never returned it. I Believe John b. 1820 is buried in Cogswell between his wife Mary Ann "Kirk" Lambright b. 1822 d. 1875 and his grandchild by Cathrine Gunyan "in the unknown BR14/3". This stone reads the age as 18yrs 5m 10d. I don't think this is right. Because, I've checked other stones of the same manufacture and dates. I found that the "4s" are very lightly engraved on the left side and over time appear as "1s" hence the 18yrs on the unknown stone. The death date on this stone reads 3-10-1868. If the age read 48yrs.instead of 18yrs, this would compute to the birth date we have for John b. 1820. Also, John's wife Mary Ann has the wrong age date on her death cert. as reported by the tax acessor. It more closely matches the date on the unknown stone. So I wonder if the acessor read John's stone instead? Mary Ann "Kirk"Lambright's stone reads 52yrs 6mo 21 days. This computes with her known Quaker birth date, so I'm fairly sure her death cert. is wrong. Also, the last year John paid taxes was 1867, and it could mean a 1868 death date. Do you have any death or burial info. on my John Lambright b. 1820

1918 Bayliss-Harding Reunion -I visited a cousin of mine yesterday (Thelma Baugh Hall) who had the attached article in some of her papers. The article probably appeared in the Bryan, Ohio newspaper around September 1, 1918. According to Thelma, her grandmother (Anna Baylis Harold) and her mother (Josephine Harold Baugh) traveled to Bryan for the reunion in 1918. I might try to see if there was an article in the Bryan newspaper the following year as the date of the next reunion is mentioned in the article.

Margaret Cooney, Nov. 13, 2002 - COONEY, MORRISON

I am a member of WCGS and have been researching the Cooney/Morrison names. I have a new email [email protected]. This is my dilema. Dr. Harvey Cooney was my husband's ggrandfather. He lived in Bryan from the 1850's. He had two children. Harvey and Hattie May. Harvey married Blanche Morrison. They had one son James Morrison Cooney who was my husband' father. I have been unable to find any record of Harvey's death or burial. The Cooney's have a large plot in Fountain Grove Cemetery. Dr. Harvey, Harriett and Hattie May are buried there. The records also list Lawrence Mc Daniels next to Hattie. Lawrence also went by Frank McDaniels. I have traced Frank and Hattie to Owosso,MI. Hattie died in 1920 and Frank remarried and died in 1941 and is buried in MI with his second wife. I have been in Bryan and checked the cemetery record books before we found out that Frank is buried in MI. I know Frank and Hattie May are the same couple because the newspaper obituary for Frank lists Hattie as his first wife and the fact that they came from Bryan, Ohio. Is there any way to find out when the records show that Lawrence Frank McDaniels was buried? Do you think that it could be Harvey Cooney next to his sister? When we checked the records there is no record of Harriet being buried in Fountain Grove and yet the newspaper obit stated that is where she was buried in 1917.

I know that Harvey was alive in 1924 in Cleveland when his wife Blanche died. I'm hoping that if we can find out when the records show that Lawrence Frank McDaniels was buried in Fountain Grove,I could check with the state for a death record for Harvey. Have you ever heard of a person as being listed in two different cemeteries in two different states? Thank you for any help you could give me on this mystery.

robinets, Nov. 15, 2002 - ROBINETTE

I was wondering if you know whether any Robinettes ever lived in your county or close by. Someone said that at one time my grandpa William Perry Robinette lived there. My dad never knew his dad. We are just trying to find out what we can. We think William was born in 1901. We think he was 37 when he had my dad.

At least two children were born during their sojourn in Williams Co. - Peter, in 1858, and Emma L., in 1861. Emma was married in Fremont, in 1878, Dr. George W. Pettey. I am hoping to find the family in the 1860 census. Any help would be most appreciated.

Bobbi A Harrison, Nov. 29, 2002 - ROOP, DIEHL, etc.

I am the administrator of the Roop Descendants & Related Families at MyFamily.com & yesterday I was contacted by the g-g-g-granddaughter of Sarah Jane (Diehl) & Amos Roop & she shared this obituary. Her name is Jeannie (Roop) Richardson E-mail [email protected] It was sent to her by a cousin of hers who found it in the Hicksville library & it's from the Hicksville News. We are in hopes that by sharing this obit with the Defiance Co. OH Genweb that we might receive the help we need in identifying the daughter named in the obit, Mrs. Frank Spires. We don't know her given name. There were actually 5 children, the eldest being Winsfield "Scott" Roop who was b-abt. 1869, as he is age 11 in the 1880 census with Sarah & Amos. Scott married Nettie Kieckner & they had a son named Earl. I have a photo of Scott & Nettie taken by the "Howe's Photo Studio, 18 South Paulina Street, Near Lake, Chicago" which is embossed on the matt. Since Scott is not mentioned in Sarah's obit, we are assuming that he may have predeceased his mother who died in 1928 in Hicksville. The other 3 sons have all been accounted for.

Our site also has photos of Sarah with her daughter & the 3 younger sons mentioned in the obit, as well as one of the Amos Roop family, showing all 5 children & both parents. The latter photo & the one of Scott & Nettie, were in my grandmother's photo album that she inherited from her mother, Mary Jane (Roop) Seekatz who was a sister to Amos. The photo with the 4 children as adults with Sarah is from Jeannie.
