Squire R. S. Lockwood.
Ransom S. Lockwood,
Justice of the Peace, died at his home in Franklin on Tuesday morning
from the effects or a stroke of paralysis received several weeks ago.
He was born at Union Village, February
13, 1810, being, therefore, at the time of his death, in his eightieth
year. His parents were Shakers and his
boyhood days were spent among the members of this sect. He was a self-made
man, his early life being passed in a hard struggle for a livelihood.
For many years he was a tailor in winter and a brick mason in summer.
At one time he was engaged in making clay pipes. He worked at tailoring
at Lytle and Waynesville and finally settled in Franklin in 1835, where
for ten years he was a successful tailor. In 1846 he was elected justice
of the peace and held the office to the time of his death. He was a good
business man and was in very good circumstances. He owned the fine brick
building where he lived and the business block in which his office was
located. In 1840 he married Miss Hannah Ross. She, with
four children, survives him.
The funeral services will be hold at the residence to-morrow (Friday)
afternoon.
