Daniel Hufford.
Born In Virginia but for Sixty Years a Leading Citizen of Warren County.

We mentioned in last week's Gazette the death of Daniel Hufford, on his farm near South Lebanon. He had advanced beyond the great age of ninety-one years. He was regarded, during the sixty years that he resided In Warren county, as one of the best of men. Speaking to the Gazette a few days ago, Thomas F. Thompson remarked: O, yes, I knew Daniel Hufford well. He was a first-class man. I was quite intimate with him for a great many years. The farm on which he died was bought of John McLean. I also knew Daniel Hufford's father. He, too, was a substantial and honorable man."

Daniel Hufford was born In Ohio county, Virginia, April 4, 1800. His father, George Hufford, was of Swiss descent. His mother was a native Virginian. He learned his trade, that of a mechanic, from his father. His opportunities for school education were very limited, but he was a natural mathematician and taught himself geometry and surveying. He was also a practical civil engineer.

In 1828, In company with another young man, Mr. Hufford took a flat boat laden with provisions from Wellsburg, Va., to New Orleans. After disposing of the merchandise and the boat they made the return trip across the country on horseback. The various experiences of that expedition and another similer one made In 1833, as often related by himself, were full of interest, attended as they were with many an incident of striking adventure.

Mr. Hufford was a strong man in every sense of the word. His physical power, combined with his intellectual energy and business sagacity, secured for him substantial prosperity and made him a successful man. To the close of his long life his mental powers continued vigorous, and his judgment was always reliable. His strict integrity and strength of character won for him the respect of all who knew him.

Mr. Hufford was a public spirited man and always took an intelligent interest in the affairs of the nation. In early life he was a whig, but from the formation of the Republican party he always voted with that party. He was never ambitious for political honors and never held public office.

In 1837 Mr. Hufford was married to Sarah E. Wilson, who died in 1848, soon after the death of her only daughter. She left three sons, all of whom are now living: Robert G., who is the treasurer of Warren county, Alexander W., who resides in Cincinnati, and George W., who is principal of one of the high schools in Indianapolis, Ind.

In 1849 Mr. Hufford was married to Eunice S. Roosa, who survives him and who is in her 84th year. Of the two sons of this union the younger, Nathan K., died in 1882; the elder, William S., resides with his family on a portion of the home farm. There are only five living grandchildren. The only surviving member of his father's family is Mrs. Malinda Kelley, who is now 80 years of age, and whose home has been with her brother for the past six years.

Eunice Swan (Richardson) Hufford

Mrs. Eunice Hufford, widow of the late Daniel Hufford, died at the home of her son, Daniel Hufford, near South Lebanon on Sunday morning. She was nearly eighty-six years of age. The cause of her death was simply a general failing of vital powers. She was a native of Vermont and was twice married, her first husband having been the late Colonel Roosa. The funeral services were held at the home of her son on Tuesday afternoon and were largely attended. They were conducted by Rev. T. A. Brandon.

Eunice Swan Hufford was born in Barre, Vermont, October 20, 1807. Her maiden name was Richardson. At the age of ten years, she came to Cincinnati with her parents. In 1834 she was married to Matthias Roosa, of South Lebanon, at that time called Deerfield. Two sons, Andrew J. and Chas. A. Roosa were born of this marriage. The younger of these, Chas. A. Roosa, is still living, and was present at his mother’s bedside at the time of her death. In 1846, Matthias Roosa died, and in 1849, Mrs. Roosa was married to Daniel Hufford, who died a little more than a year and a half ago. Two sons were born of this last marriage, William S. and Nathan K. Hufford, the latter of whom died April 8, 1882. For several years the deceased has been a great sufferer from stomach trouble and rheumatism, yet she bore her suffering always with a patient endurance which seemed remarkable to those who knew her. She was finally relieved of her earthly suffering on the morning of February 12, at either o’clock, at the age of 85 years, 3 months and 22 days. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. T. A. Brandon, at the family residence near South Lebanon, Tuesday, February 14, at 1 p.m.
