Mission and Membership
General Henry Knox Chapter of the Ohio Society Sons of the American Revolution was activated in early 2003 by compatriots living in Knox and Licking Counties . The men honor the County’s namesake, the Commander of the American Artillery and the First Secretary of War, Henry Knox.
The purposes of the Society are historic, educational, and patriotic. It seeks to maintain and extend:
The institutions of American freedom
An appreciation for true patriotism
A respect for our national symbols
The value of American citizenship
The unifying force of e pluribus unum that has created from people of many nations, one nation and one people.
Membership is open to any male, age 18 and over, who can trace his family linage back to an ancestor who supported the cause of American Independence during the years 1774 – 1783.
The Ohio Society was formed in 1889 at the Ohio Statehouse in the Office of Governor Foraker. Today the Society has 1,600 members and over 35 local chapters.
The National Society was established on the 100th Anniversary of George Washington's Inauguration, April 30, 1889. In 1906 the United States Congress chartered the National Society. Today the national headquarters is in Louisville, Kentucky, and has 470 local chapters with a total membership exceeding 30,000.
