"Mrs. Homer Gladle Dies. Gouverneur -- The funeral for Mrs. Mildred Smith
Gladle, 62, wife of Homer Gladle, Farm to Market Road, Fowler, who died Saturday
in Edward John Noble Hospital, was this morning at 10 at Burr-Green Funeral Home,
with Rev. Stanley E. Brown, pastor, United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial
was in Wayside cemetery, Richville.
"Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Retha Abrantes,
Gouverneur, and Mrs. Richard (Anna) Lowey, Martinton, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs.
Anna Devendorf, Pierces Corners and Mrs. Doug (Dorothy) Cunningham, Oxbow; three
brothers, Elmer E. Smith, Richland; Irving Smith, Clayton and Gilbert Smith,
Dyer, Ind.; eight grandchildren and one great grandson.
"She was born at Richville, Aug. 26, 1907, daughter of Nathan and Anne
Brotherton Smith, and attended school at Gouverneur. She was married to Homer
Gladle at Rossie, Aug. 19, 1925.
"The couple lived in the Gouverneur section where Mr. Gladle worked as
a carpenter, and moved to Rossie for three years where they operated a farm.
They returned to Gouverneur where Mr. Gladle continued carpentry work until
retiring and moving to Fowler." She died on 27 Sep 1969 in Gouverneur,
St. Lawrence, NY. She was buried in Wayside cemetery, Richville,
St. Lawrence, NY. Mildred Louise Smith and Homer L. Gladle were
married on 19 Aug 1925 in Rossie, St. Lawrence, NY. Ceremony performed
by Francis Lewis, Justice of the Peace. County Clerk Register #12152. Homer
L. Gladle (son of Sidney Ebenezer Gladle and Iva Mae Tulley) was born on
30 Aug 1905 in Macomb, St. Lawrence, NY. He was in a car accident
on 10 May 1966 in Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, NY. "Man Nearly
Drowns, Given Ticket After Car Collapses Span--Gouverneur, May 10 [1966]--Homer
L. Gladle, 60, Gouverneur, Route 3, escaped possible drowning early this morning
when his car struck Dukey's bridge, Blackburn road, causing the span to collapse.
"Gouverneur state police and Herbert H. Besaw, Island Branch road, rescued
the man who was partially submerged in the icy water. Gladle, who suffered a
minor laceration of the forehead, was issued a summons for driving while intoxicated.
"According to state police, Gladle was proceeding from outer Grove street
to Blackburn road in the town of Fowler at 1:40 and hit the edge of the old bridge
as he approached. His car bounded off and hit the middle section of the span,
causing it to collapse, tipping sideways. An iron railing caught the car, holding
it in a vertical position with the front end in the water.
"The driver crawled through the car window and called for help as he
hung onto the auto. Mr. Besaw, who lives nearby, came to the scene and called
state police. Troopers lowered a rope to Gladle, assisting him into a boat brought
by Mr. Besaw.
"The Blackburn road connects outer Grove street with Route 58, Hailesboro
road. The town lines of Gouverneur and Fowler meet in the center of the bridge."
He died on 8 Nov 1972 in Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, NY. His obituary
appeared on 8 Nov 1972 in the Watertown Daily Times of Watertown, Jefferson,
NY, as follows: "H. L. Gladle Dead at 67. Gouverneur -- Homer
L. Gladle, 67, Farm to Market Road, died at 3 this morning in Gouverneur Edward
John Noble Hospital, where he had been a patient four days.
"The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Burr-Green Funeral Home, Rev.
Stanley E. Brown, pastor, United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be
in Wayside Cemetery, Richville.
"Calling hours at the funeral home are Thursday afternoon and evening.
"Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Retha Abrantes, Harrisville, Mrs.
Richard (Anna) Lowery, Martinton, Ill.; a sister, Mrs. Fern Shuttleton, Carthage;
three brothers, Harold, Carthage, Gaylord, Edwards, and Sidney, Watertown; and
seven grandchildren.
"Born in the Town of Macomb Aug. 30, 1905, son of Sidney and Iva Tulley
Gladle, he attended school at Macomb and married Mildred L. Smith at Rossie in
August, 1925. Mrs. Gladle died Sept. 27, 1969.
"Mr. Gladle worked as a carpenter in the Star Lake, Potsdam, and Gouverneur
sectors.
"He was a life member of the Gouverneur Rod and Gun Club." He was
buried in Wayside cemetery, Richville, St. Lawrence, NY. Mildred
