1. Otheniel Brotherton appeared in the census in 1820 in Camillus, Onondaga, NY. He appeared in the census in 1830 in Elbridge, Onondaga, NY. He appeared in the census in 1835 in Antwerp, Jefferson, NY. He appeared in the census in 1840 in Antwerp, Jefferson, NY. Page 542. He died on 29 Mar 1843 in Antwerp, Jefferson, NY. He was born about 1780. The only children specifically listed in Otheneil's will are sons Lester and Joel, and Betsey's children, Belinda, Mary Jane, Martha, and Elijah. Amos and Daniel are both mentioned as deceased, but not specifically identified as sons. Enoch [see below] seems almost certainly a son, but other candidates [from 1830 census, Elbridge] include Andrew, Jeremiah, Moses, Reuben. There is also a Phebe, who could be the widow of a son.
The probate papers [filed in Jefferson county Surrogate court, Watertown, NY] list Polly Manning, Lester, Joel, Laura Brooks, all adults; plus minors: Becka Ann, Watertown; Mary M. Pamelia; Belinda, Mary Jane, Martha, Elijah, Antwerp; Mary, Niram, Nathan & unknown, Elbridge; Jerusha, Jason, Nathaniel, Wilna; Malvin and Hulda E., Antwerp. It is possible that Becka Ann, Mary M., Malvin, and Hulda E., are a family group.
In Elbridge: Mary, Niram, Nathan, and _____.
The combination of names here almost assures that these are the Niram and Nathan who later resided in Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties. This is probably the Mary Jane who married William Neil, though some have shown that wife as Mary Jane, daughter of Otheneil and Betsey. Since the date seen for the death of Mary Sweet, Otheneil's first wife, is between 1830 and 1835, that would seem to rule out any daughter of Betsey's, since Mary Jane Neil was born 1821-1824. Mary Neil's obit says she was born in Elbridge. From the Jefferson county clerk's office: 1. In 1835, Enoch had 3 males and 3 females in his household, including one married woman <45, and 2 females <16; 1 male born in the past year. 2. A Horace Adams got deeds for the same two parcels of land from Lucretia Brotherton, Niram Brotherton, Nathan Brotherton, William "Neild" and wife Mary, and Lovell Kidder and wife Jerusha. This would seem to show a family of Enoch & Lucretia, with children Niram and Nathan Brotherton, Mary Neil, and Jerusha Kidder. The inclusion of Mary Neil and her husband in this group would seem to seal the fact that she was a sister to Niram and Nathan. a Jerusha of the right age is seen in the IGI as the daughter of Enoch Brotherton and Lucretia McIntyre, and the wife of Lovell Kidder. The couple were married, and their first children were born, in Jefferson county, NY. Enoch, Lucretia, and "Jerutia" are shown as a family in the LDS IGI. That Jerusha was married in Felts Mills, Jefferson county, NY, and her first children were born in Antwerp, same county, making it likely she is the same Jerusha.

In Wilna: Jerusha, Jason, and Nathaniel.
I have arbitrarily called the father of this family Daniel, though as noted, I have seen no proof that Otheneil even had a son Daniel [it is implied in his will].
In Watertown, Pamelia, Antwerp: Becka Ann, Mary M., Malvin, and Hulda E. Note that this may not be a family group - that Becka and/or Mary could belong to one of the other two groups, or somewhere else. Apparently a Malcolm, age 12, and a Huldah, age 10, appear on the 1850 census in Mackinac, MI. Since I had already used Daniel, I arbitrarily assigned Amos, the other son implied in Otheneil's will, as the father of this family.

Otheniel Brotherton and Betsy ___ were married. Betsy ___ was born about 1798/99. She died on 26 Jul 1875 in Watertown, Jefferson, NY. Age 76 years. She died on 26 Jul 1875 in Watertown, Jefferson, NY. Age 76 years. She was buried in N. Watertown cemetery, Watertown, Jefferson, NY. [Cemetery listing s copied by others from DAR "Cemetery, Church, & Town Records of New York State"; Vol. III, pge. 150. FHLC #836757]. She was buried in N. Watertown cemetery, Watertown, Jefferson, NY. [Cemetery listing as copied by others from DAR "Cemetery, Church, & Town Records of New York State"; Vol. III, pge. 150. FHLC #836757]. The question is who is buried with Betsy? [Cemetery has no record - stone may be unreadable] It seems likely that she is buried with the family of one of her children. Betsey's name does not show on the 1850 census indexes, so she might have been living with another Brotherton, or have remarried [though DAR cemetery records show name as Brotherton].
