His obituary appeared on 26 Dec 1998 in the Watertown Daily Times, as follows: "ALAN D. GATES 1 1/2-YEAR-OLD BOY. CARTHAGE. Alan D. Gates, 1 1/2, of 258 Champion St., died of sepsis Thursday afternoon at State University of New York Health Science Center, Syracuse, where he had been a patient since mid-November. "He was born March 19, 1997, in Watertown, son of Waylon Gates and Amy Clark. "Surviving besides his parents, both of Carthage, are his paternal grandparents, Muriel Gates, Fowler, and Duane Gates, Carthage; his maternal grandparents, Carol Clark, Conway, S.C., and Ray Clark, Florida; a paternal great-grandfather, Merton Brotherton, Gouverneur; paternal great-grandparents Dennis and Juanita LaVancha, Great Bend, and a maternal great-grandmother, Ellen Cutler, Vermont. "The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur, with Nathan Gates, the child's great-uncle, officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Antwerp. "Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. "Donations may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association." He was buried in Hillside cemetery, Antwerp, Jefferson, NY.
