Calkins, Jean Mary Jean Mary Calkins was born Jan. 10, 1931, to Theodore ("Ted") and Mary Childs and was raised by them in Sinclairville, N.Y. She is survived by an older brother, Rodger Childs, and two younger sisters, Wilma Abbott and Shirley Kerr. Jean married Donald F. Calkins in August 1950, who died of natural causes in 1996 after 46 years of marriage. She gave birth to two children, Mark Calkins and Bonnie (Calkins) Rounds. Mark and his wife, Diane, gave Jean three grandchildren, Johnathon, Julie and Danielle. Bonnie and her husband, Randy, gave her two grandchildren, Samantha and Daniel. She was also given three great-grandchildren: Zoe, now 4 years old, through Johnathon; Sarah, now 12 years old, through Samantha; and Arielle, now 7 months old, through Daniel. She also is survived by many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, all of whom she loved very much. A stay-at-home mom, Jean was extremely active in the lives of her children as they were growing up, and also became a Girl Scout mom, then a 4-H leader. Once the children were grown, Jean worked many years outside the home, first in the flower department of Super Duper, then as a home healthcare assistant. She was an avid gardener, and especially loved wild flowers. Her dream was to transform her woodland home on West Oak Hill Road to a walk garden, with a stone path through the woods behind her house. She saved many wild flowers for this purpose, but her health failed before her dream could be realized. For many years, Jean was an active member of the Fluvanna Community Church as well as the Sinclairville Garden Club, until December 2006 when she relocated to Las Vegas, Nev., to live with her daughter and husband, Bonnie and Randy, due to health reasons. She lived with Bonnie and Randy until her final six months of life, when her daily care required continual professional assistance. Jean passed away Dec. 9, 2011. She will be missed by all who knew her. There will be a memorial service for Jean at the Fluvanna Community Church on Saturday, June 23, 2012, at 4 p.m., with a fellowship immediately following. Food will be provided by the Fluvanna Community Church's Ladies Aide Committee. |
Campbell, Mary J. Mary J. Campbell, 79, died at 11:18 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 1, 2012), in WCA Hospital. She was born Sept. 19, 1932, in Steamburg, N.Y., the daughter of the late Ralph and Nola Stacy Whitmore. Mary worked for The Post-Journal as a carrier on the Lakewood/Panama route for many years. She was an avid collector of many fine items, including dolls. She also enjoyed crocheting, plants and gardening, especially African Violets, and she loved her cat and dog. Mary's final gift was that of an organ and tissue donor. Surviving are her husband, William W. Campbell III, whom she married March 5, 1966; two daughters: Lisa Warner Johnson (Mike) of Jamestown, and Patty Warner Johnson (Harold) of Frewsburg; four grandchildren: Sarah Johnson, Andrew Johnson, Danielle Johnson and Brian Johnson (Sarah); a great-granddaughter, Emma Johnson; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Kenneth E. "Bud" Warner; and four brothers: Michael, Luther, Robert and James Whitmore. Canfield, Kelton E. "Kelly" Kelton E. "Kelly" Canfield, 80, of 124 Catlin Ave., died Saturday morning, May 19, 2012, in WCA Hospital. He was born Sept. 21, 1931, in Fairdale, Pa., a son of the late Oscar L. and Zida Elizabeth Shotwell Canfield. In early years, Kelly played semi-professional football as a running back in the Triple Cities: Endicott, Johnson City and Binghamton, N.Y. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1950, and served until 1954 during the Korean War in the Atlantic. He then worked in the New York City area for a short time before becoming employed by Agway. Kelly worked for Agway for more than 41 years, 21 years in Horseheads, Elmira, Owego, Candor and Falconer, N.Y., and for 20 years at the Jamestown Regional Mill, retiring in 1994. Kelly was formerly a member of Falconer United Methodist Church, where he was past president of the Couples Club, served as an usher and was the chef and planner of many dinners for Mother/Daughter Ban-quets, Couples Club, Camping for Youth Church Camp and church potluck dinners. He served as treasurer of the Falconer Golden Falcons, and enjoyed helping with many of their parades. Kelly was a charter member and past distinguished president of the Falconer Kiwanis. He became a member of Christ First United Methodist Church in 1981. A member of the Moose since 1968, Kelly was a life member of the Ira Lou Spring Post 149 American Legion, where he was a past commander serving two consecutive terms, board member and member of the firing squad. He enjoyed camping and spending time with family and friends. Surviving is his wife, Elizabeth "Betsy" Sawyer Canfield, whom he married in 1954 in Greenwich Village, New York City; a son, Paul S. (Dawn) Canfield of New Hampshire; a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Williams of Falconer; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Myrna Gail Davidson of Maryland. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Clinton and Cleon Canfield. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Christ Chapel of the Christ First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Cannon, Robert Leland Robert Leland Cannon, 89, of West Deer Township, Pa., died Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, in UPMC-Passavant Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pa. Husband of Ida (Coennen) Cannon. He was born March 22, 1922, in Jamestown, N.Y., to the late Leland and Irene (Simmons) Cannon. He was a paratrooper with the 517th Parachute Infantry Regiment in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Cannon started his career as an armature winder at Westinghouse, Pittsburgh, next worked at Daily's Juice in Oakmont, Pa., then retired in 1987 from Key Bank in Jamestown, N.Y. Robert was the past secretary of the North Side Sportsman Club, when he resided in Pittsburgh, Pa. While living in New York, he was a volunteer fireman and fire police for 37 years in Busti, Lakewood, and Celeron, a past president and secretary for Chautauqua County fire police, and a member of the Lakewood American Legion Post 1286. He also served as an usher, lector, choir member, and eucharistic minister for the Sacred Heart Church in Lakewood, N.Y. He served as an usher and choir member when he was a member at St. Ursula Catholic Church. He is currently a member at St. Victor Catholic Church in West Deer Township. He is also a member of West Deer Volunteer Fire Department, and the local American Legion Post 296. He is survived by his wife, Ida (Coennen) Cannon, whom he married Sept. 12, 1945 of West Deer Township, Pa; one daughter, Nancy (Albert) Hammer of Butler, Pa.; four sons: James (Donna) Cannon of Hampton Township, Pa., David (Mary) Cannon of Butler, Pa., Donald (Danna) Cannon of West Deer Township, Pa., and Kevin Cannon of Lakewood, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and his sister, Betty Jean Swanson of Jamestown, N.Y. Carduner, Robert H. Robert H. Carduner, 84, of 20 Max Drive, Morristown, N.J., died Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011, at the Morris Hills Center in Morristown. He was the husband of Linda Wozneak Carduner, whom he married Aug. 6, 1977. Robert was born April 30, 1927, in Bronx, N.Y., a son of the late Joseph and Theresa Bauman Carduner. A World War II U.S. Navy veteran, he saw duty in the Battle of Okinawa. From 1946 to 1966 he served as a New York City policeman. For the next 15 years he was regional sales manager for the Lawyers Cooperative Publishing Co. and from 1981 until 1996, owner and president of the U.S. Lawbook Co. Robert is survived by his wife of Morristown; two sons: Keith (Simona) Carduner of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and Thomas Carduner of Liberty, N.Y.; a daughter, Laura Carduner Rivello of Lakeland, Fla.; five grandchildren: William and Emma Carduner of Bloomfield, Mich., and Ashley, Noelle and Zachary Rivello of Lakeland, Fla. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur Carduner. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Father Dennis Crowley, hospital chaplain of the Morristown Medical Center and former Parochial Vicar of Assumption Parish in Morristown, N.J., will be celebrant. Carlos, Mary Alice Mary Alice Carlos, 80, of 54 Matteson Ave., Fredonia, N.Y., formerly of Jamestown, passed away at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday (March 26, 2013), in the Brooks Memorial Hospital, Dunkirk, N.Y. She was born July 6, 1932, in Binghamton, N.Y., a daughter of the late Thaddeus William and Margaret M. Scallon Carlos. Surviving are a brother William J. (Diane) Carlos of Greenhurst, N.Y.; a nephew, David (Elizabeth) DuBois of Bemus Point, N.Y.; several cousins: Barbara S. Parlato, Margaret Corkery Erickson, Thomas Scallon, Kenneth Scallon and Sally Corkery, who was very supportive over the years with her many acts of kindness. She was preceded in death by her sister, Maureen M. Carlos, who died May 12, 2012. The family would also like to give thanks and gratitude to the staff of the Matteson Avenue home for their many years of caring and concern for Mary Alice. Carlson, Barbara F. August 20, 2012 The Post-Journal Barbara F. Carlson, wife of Don A. Carlson, passed away at 11:30 p.m. Saturday (August 18, 2012) in W.C.A. Hospital. Barb was born February 27, 1930, in Jamestown, N.Y., the daughter of the late A. Joseph and Priscilla Armstrong Fairbank Sr. She was a 1947 graduate of Lakewood High School, a 1952 graduate of the Buffalo General Hospital School of Nursing and a 1976 graduate of University of Buffalo Geriatric Nurse Practitioner Program. Before her retirement she was a nurse practitioner for the medical office of Dr. Wolf-Dieter Krahn. In earlier years she worked for Dr. Voltmann, Dr. Lester and in the surgery department of W.C.A. Hospital. Following her retirement she was the office clerk for Dr. Michael Johnson, DDS. A lifelong resident of Chautauqua County, Barb was actively involved and supporter of the Jamestown Audubon Society. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Don A. Carlson, whom she married July 1, 1953, her children: B. Gail Internicloa of Utica, N.Y., Jeffrey D. Carlson of Ashville, N.Y., and Joseph A. Carlson of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; nine grandchildren: Jason Price of Sonoma Calif.,, Corinne Schmidt of Cato, N.Y., Kristen Baker of Waterville, N.Y., Matthew Price of Utica, N.Y., Capt. Carlson, Gilbert L. Gilbert L. Carlson, 92, formerly of Levant, passed away Thursday (June 28, 2012), in Heritage Green Rehab & Skilled Nursing Facility. A lifelong area resident, he was born Jan, 19, 1920, in Levant, the son of the late Gilbert and Alta Derby Carlson. Gilbert was a graduate of Falconer High School, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. In earlier years, he was employed with Barnes Construction in Falconer, as a carpenter for 30 years. He was a member of the Henry Mosher Post 638, American Legion, John W. Tiffany Post Veterans of Foreign Wars and the local carpenter's union. He enjoyed fishing, yard work, traveling, sports and also tinkering and repairing small engines. Gilbert is survived by a sister, Elenore Bird of Falconer; three nephews: Jay (Renee) Bird, Robert Bird and Justin (Heidi) Bird, all of Falconer; a grandniece Jessica (Mitch) Bellinger of Falconer; three grand-nephews: Jonathan (Alysha) Bird of Spokane, Wash., Michael Bird and Devon Estus, both of Falconer; and several other nieces and nephews. Carlson, Kathey S. August 29, 2012 Kathey S. Carlson, 60, of 303 W. Fifth St., Jamestown, passed away Monday (Aug. 27, 2012), in WCA Hospital. A lifelong area resident, she was born Sept. 21, 1951, in Jamestown, the daughter of the late Robert and Virginia Snyder Carlson. Kathey was a graduate of Falconer High School and attended Fredonia State College, Jamestown Community College and Jamestown Business College. She was employed by Bush Industries. Kathey was a member of the Jamestown Little Theater, and enjoyed reading, music, singing and the company of her many friends. She also enjoyed studying scripture and regular prayer. Surviving is her son, Erik (Bonnie) Coulter of Ashville; two granddaughters: Taren and Peyton; two brothers: Robert R. Carlson of Portland, Ore., and Kenneth R. Buck of Falconer; and a sister, Lois Carlson of Frewsburg. She was preceded in death by her father in 1997, her mother in 1976; and a sister, Carol Dallas in 1996. Kathey will be remembered as a generous and caring person. She will be missed as a loving mother, grandmother and friend. Kathey had a contagious laugh that she would share with anyone freely. Even in the worst situations Kathey would always see the bright side of things, she would make sure to help you see the bright side as well. There was never a time that she put herself before those that she cared about and loved. Kathey will not be missed but instead remembered. Carlson, Maribelle FREWSBURG - Maribelle Carlson, 73, of 187 W. Main St., died Wednesday (Nov. 30, 2011), at WCA Hospital. She was born March 21, 1938 in Angelica, the daughter of Carl Sr. and Marion Silsby Patterson. She had worked for several area restaurants. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, and enjoyed birdwatching. In earlier years, she taught bowling to young children at Frewsburg Lanes. Maribelle is survived by five children: Mary (Dennis) Brink, Patty Mead (Tim Berg), Richard (Sue) Carlson, Michael (Deb) Carlson of Frewsburg, and Vicky (Fred) Williams of Jefferson, Ohio; 13 grandchildren: Sam Zembardo lll, Melanie Zembardo, Daryl Brink, and Josh (Lindsey) Caldwell of Frewsburg, Nakia (Sabrina) Mead and Nokomis (Dave) Stanton of Russell, Pa., Dave Zembardo of Lakewood, Jay Baker of Ellington, Danielle (James) Payne of Bemus Point, Teri Zembardo of Great Valley, Richard Carlson of Charlotte, N.C., Christopher Moynihan of Jamestown, and Nicole (Justin) Martin of Watertown, N.Y., 12 great-grandchildren; and 11 sisters and brothers: Clair, Frank, Rose, Marshall, Wesley, Anna, Cora, Betty, Carol, Wilma, and Joyce. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a grandson, Matthew Brink; two brothers; Jim Silsby, and Carl Patterson Jr.; two sisters: Sarah Macri and Marion Patterson; and her grandmother, Mary Wank. Carnes, Frances M. Frances M. Carnes, 80, of 248 S. Main St., Jamestown, passed away at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday (March 26, 2013), in her home. An area resident for most of her life, she was born Nov. 19, 1932, in New Mine, Pa., a daughter of the late Russell and Phyllis Schepis Camarata. She was a 1950 graduate of Jamestown High School, and in previous years had worked for the former J.C. Kelso Store, Super Duper Market and Bigelow's Department Store. She attended the New Covenant Assembly Church and was a member of the Rebecca Lodge. She also enjoyed attending the activities of the Falconer Senior Center. She will be remembered as a loving and caring mother and grandmother, who loved to spend time with her family, especially seeing the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved to cook and bake for her family, and was an avid reader. Surviving are two sons: Gary K. (Sherry) Carnes of Jamestown, and Brian K. (Cindy) Carnes of Bemus Point; a daughter, Kathleen F. (Gordy) Hallquist of Falconer; six grandchildren: Laura Carnes of Jamestown, Adam Carnes of Davenport, Fla., Ryan (Vickie) Carnes of Celoron, Matthew (Erin) Carnes of Lakewood, Stacey (Javon) Sharp of Jamestown, and Joshua Mayes of Falconer, seven great-grandchildren: Michael Carnes, Kaylyn Carnes, Landon Carnes, Brady Classon, Jillian Sharp, Abrielle Sharp and Romello Sharp; a sister, JoAnn Hofmann of Erie, Pa.; and a brother, Joseph Camarata of Lakewood. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton Carnes Jr., who died in 1999; two sisters: Mary Martino and Ida Troyer; and two infant brothers. Carr, 71, of Snug Harbor Road, Mayville, died Monday (June 25, 2012), in Westfield Memorial Hospital. She was born July 12, 1940, in Jamestown, N.Y., the daughter of the late Clayton and Dorothy Hook Hall. Judy had previously worked at Kling's Furniture in Mayville. She was a member of the Lakewood American Legion Auxiliary, and the Lake Chautauqua Memorial Post Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Mayville. Judy enjoyed baking, and bowling. She had bowled in different women's leagues in Mayville and Jamestown for 35 years. Judy also enjoyed working at the produce stand that she and her husband operated on Route 394 at Snug Harbor. She is survived by her husband, Frederick H. Carr, whom she married March 9, 1983, in Chautauqua; one son, Rick Weller of Jamestown; one daughter, Debbie Meyers of Bonita Springs, Fla.; two grandchildren: Ricky Weller of Philadelphia and Samantha Weller of Jamestown; one sister, Janice Manchester of Bonita Springs, Fla; and one brother, Chuck Hall of Panama. Carter, Gary Lee Gary Lee Carter, 64, of 10312 Circle East, Meadville, Pa., died Wednesday May 30, 2012, in UPMC Hamot, Erie, the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. A native of Bradford, Pa., he was born Aug. 26, 1947, the son of the late Jack and Edna Carter. He was a graduate of Bradford High School. A salesman all of his career, he was most recently employed by Price Auto Sales, Meadville. Surviving are his wife, the former Rebecca Brake, whom he married Dec. 20, 2002; three children: Matthew, Todd and Jamie Jo Carter; three stepchildren: Michelle Brown and Jeremy and Nathan Haley; and eight grandchildren. Casler, David MAYVILLE - David Casler, 69, of Elm Flat Road, Mayville, died Wednesday (Dec. 7, 2011), in his home. He was born Oct. 24, 1942, in Westfield, N.Y., the son of the late Floyd and Charlotte Thorton Casler. Dave was a graduate of Mayville Central School, and a veteran having served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. He had been employed by the village of Mayville working for the Department of Public Works. He had also been a police officer for the village of Mayville. Dave belonged to the William L. Travis American Legion and the Lake Chautauqua Memorial Post Veterans of Foreign Wars, both in Mayville. Dave loved driving around enjoying the scenery. He is survived by two daughters: Christine (Rich) Cooper of Mayville, and Kimberly Casler of North East, Pa; four grandchildren: Alexandria Earls, Troy Cooper, Cassidy Earls and Hayley Cooper; one brother, Bill Casler of Greenhurst; and one sister, Roberta (Carl) Vilardo of Westfield. Casselman, Donald L. Donald L. Casselman, 81, of 219 Newland Ave., died Friday, June 1, 2012, in WCA Hospital. A lifelong Jamestown resident, he was born Feb. 2, 1931, a son of the late Irwin Casselman and Dorothy Seaborn Casselman Andersen. He was a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps serving from 1950-53. He had been employed by Fancher Chair as a factory worker and earlier by Chase Interiors. Surviving are three children: Debra Ingham, Daphne (Steve Fairbanks) Cross and John Casselman; a stepson Joel (Mary Ann) Bishop; eight grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; a sister Miriam C. Price; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife the former Evelyn Wentworth, Aug. 18, 1989; a daughter Diana Casselman; a grandson; stepchildren, Tom, Alton and Kay Bishop; two sisters, Martha Goodrich and Carol Casselman; three brothers, Vincent, Lawrence and Charles Lynn Casselman; and his stepfather Niels Andersen. Caswell, Herbert James RANDOLPH - Herbert James Caswell, 81, of Bowen Road, Randolph, passed away at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012, at home while under the care of Hospice. He was born Nov. 25, 1930, in Randolph, the son of the late Roy and Isabel Meacham Caswell. He attended Randolph Central School, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War era. Retiring in 1989, Mr. Caswell had been employed by MRC Bearings in Falconer, for 33 years. In his youth he had worked for his grandparents on their dairy farm in Randolph. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and attending local, state and national fairs. He is survived by his daughter and caregiver, Cynthia L. Caswell, with whom he shared a home; two brothers: Donald Caswell and his wife, Arlie of Falconer, and Amos Caswell and his wife Beverly, of Randolph; two granddaughters: Amanda Hall and Amy Hall; four great-grandchildren; Damien Hall, Tenielle Hall, Joseph Devaul and Katlynn Johnson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jocelyn M. Wilson Caswell, whom he married June 25, 1955, and who preceded him on May 9, 1966; and a brother, Edward Caswell. Cates, Robert E. Robert E. Cates, 92, most recently of Emeritus of Lakewood, and formerly of 157 Sanford Dr., Jamestown, N.Y., moved to heaven from WCA Hospital on Jan. 3, 2013, at 7:15 a.m. He was born April 23, 1920, in Thorndike, Maine, the son of Robert B. and Ellen (Webster) Cates. He was married for 64 years to Beulah (Black) Cates. They were married on Nov. 28, 1942, in Anacostia, D.C., and she predeceased him in 2007. He graduated from Unity Maine High School, and worked for Keyes Fibre Co. in Waterville, Maine, prior to joining the U.S. Navy and serving in both World War II and the Korean conflict. After the service, he rejoined Keyes Fibre and worked there for 35 years, serving as their plant manager in both New Iberia, La., and Hammond, Ind., until his retirement in 1985. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8835 of Waterville, Maine, and of the Waterville Lodge No. 33 AF& AM since 1947. He was also a member of Zion Covenant Church, past president of AARP local chapter 334, and he and his wife delivered for Meals on Wheels in Jamestown for five years. He was always active in church activities and community projects wherever he resided. He is survived by a daughter, Sandra L. (David) Rishell of Jamestown, N.Y.; and a son, Robert L. (Veronica) Cates of The Villages, Fla. He is also survived by grandchildren: Judith (Scott) LeRoy and Jennifer M. Rishell of Columbus, Ohio, and John D. (Jill) Rishell of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and great-grandchildren: Spenser and Sarah LeRoy and Lillian and Emily Rishell. He was predeceased by two brothers: Claude (Jack) Cates and Cecil M. Cates; and twin great-grandsons, Nathan and Luke Rishell. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Rick Miller will officiate. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Chall, Dr. Wesley R. Dr. Wesley R. Chall, 78, of 202 Beechview Ave., died Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012, in WCA Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. A Jamestown native, he was born March 27, 1933, the son of the late Russell and Ina Bloomberg Chall. He was a 1951 graduate of Jamestown High School, attended College of Wooster and later graduated in 1957 from University at Buffalo Dental School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from 1962 to 1964 achieving the rank of captain. Prior to his retirement in 1998, he practiced family dentistry in Jamestown for 40 years. After he retired, he volunteered for Meals on Wheels and also drove for CARTS. He was a lifelong member of Zion Covenant Church, where he participated in the choir for 62 years and had served as vice chairman of the church and Sunday school superintendant. Wes had a passion and love of music. Beyond time spent with the church choir he also sang with Chautauqua Chamber Singers, Jamestown Choral Society and The Living Christmas Tree at First Covenant Church. Surviving are his wife, Pastor Sally Leman Chall, whom he married July 12, 1958; three children: Karin (Jack) Anderson of Fairport, N.Y., Kristine (Donald) Bingham of Naperville, Ill. and Thomas (Leslie) Chall of Wheaton, Ill.; six grandchildren: Katherine (Jarrad Coon) Crimmins and Benjamin Crimmins of Fairport, Karl Bingham and Erik Bingham of Naperville and Emma Chall and Allison Chall of Wheaton; a great-grandson, Mason Coon of Fairport; and a sister, Cynthia (Richard) Holt of Jamestown. Chapman, Allan C. KENNEDY - Allan C. Chapman, 60, of Cemetery Street, Kennedy, passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2012, in the Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled Nursing Center. He was born Aug. 5, 1951, in Jamestown, the son of Maynard C. and June Butts Chapman. Al was a 1969 graduate of Falconer Central School and a 1976 graduate of Potsdam University with a bachelor's degree. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served from 1971 to 1973. He retired due to illness from The Resource Center in Jamestown. He had also been employed by Borden, Inc. (Alcoa) and Cardinal Hills Golf Course, both in Randolph. He was a very active member of the American Legion, where he was known as Chappy. He served the Randolph American Legion Post 181 as finance officer following Michael Benca, third vice 1981 to 1982, second vice 1982 to 1983, first vice 1983 to 1984, post commander 1984 to 1985 and 1991 to 1992 and has served on the executive committee 1992 to present, Cattaraugus County American Legion, golf committee for many years, chaplain 2001 to 2002, third vice 2007 to 2008, second vice 2008 to 2009, first vice 2009 to 2010 and commander 2010 to 2011. He was also a member of the Falconer Moose Lodge, Cardinal Hills Golf Course in Randolph, where he participated with the Clarence Barton Memorial Golf League as a player and former officer. He enjoyed golfing, cross country skiing, working out at the Jamestown YMCA, dancing and spending time with his grandchildren, family and friends. He is survived by his mother, June Butts Chapman Locke and her husband, Norman J., of Kennedy; a daughter, Breann Getridge and her husband, Matthew, of Columbus, Ohio; a son, Cory (Amy Hoch) Chapman of Kennedy; three grandchildren: Ayla and Kenna Getridge of Columbus, and Mason Chapman of Kennedy; a sister-in-law, Susan Morrison Chapman of Falconer; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Maynard C. Chapman on May 16, 1983; brother, Bruce E. Chapman, Barbara Rhinehart August 30, 2012 Barbara Rhinehart Chapman, 76, of Jamestown, died Friday (Aug. 24, 2012) in the WCA Hospital. She was born in Jamestown on Aug. 15, 1936, the daughter of the late Burdette and Freda Forsmark Rhinehart. She is survived by two sons: Wade (Kris) and Nathan Chapman; a daughter, Margo McFaul; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Chapman and by a daughter, Ursula Lopez. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Jehovah's Witnesses South Congregation. Chapman, William L. �Bill� William L. "Bill" Chapman, 54, of 1 Kipp St., Jamestown, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011, in the Cleveland Clinic. An area resident his entire life, he was born Oct. 31, 1957, in Jamestown, to Barbara M. Chapman Burleigh and Henry D. Crick. He was adopted and lovingly raised by Gerald and Catherine Wilson Chapman in Ashville, N.Y. Bill attended Panama Central School with the class of 1975. Throughout the years, Bill worked for Ethan Allen, Larson Metal, and most recently, as a bus driver for Advanced Transportation. Bill was an active member of the Chautauqua County Amateur FM Association, his call letters N2QHJ, and the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service. He was an avid outdoorsman. He loved camping, fishing, and simply picnicing in the woods, especially with his family. Surviving are his wife, Deborah M. Tracy Chap-man, whom he married June 30, 1990; his mother, Barbara; three children: Michelle (Scott) Waterman of Jamestown, Christopher (Jessica) Chapman of Bremen, Ga., and Anastasia Chapman of Jamestown, currently residing in Blackwood, Caerphilly, Wales, with her fiance, Russell Sheldon; five grandchildren: Kayli and Emileigh Waterman of Jamestown, and Owen, Alex, and Ethan Chapman of Bremen, Ga; five sisters: Vicki L. Charles, Julieanne Julieanne Charles, 71, of 69 Allen St. passed away at 8:56 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 25, 2011), in WCA Hospital. A lifelong area resident, she was born May 16, 1940, in Jamestown, N.Y., a daughter of the late Julius Goranson and the late Jeannette Johnson Goranson Yonkers. She was a lifelong member of the Salvation Army, where she was active in the Ladies Aide Society, the Salvation Army Thrift Shop, and enjoyed visiting fellow members in nursing homes. She also loved the annual Santa Lucia Festival at Salvation Army. She was a member of the Samuel Derby Post 556 American Legion Auxiliary, Frewsburg, and loved spending time scrapbooking. She will be remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother and grand-mother who loved attending her grandchildren's many activities. Surviving are her husband, Robert E. Chase, Donna Jean "DJ" Our mother, Donna Jean "DJ" Chase, 76, of Del Rio, Texas, passed away on May 18, 2012, in her sleep at home, after a long and courageous battle with Scleroderma. She is survived by her daughter, Kimbra Chase of Jamestown, N.Y.; sons: Calvin (Terri) Chase of Cape Coral, Fla., and Scott (Tammy) Chase of Randolph, N.Y.; six grandchildren: Kate (Stephen Postle) Sweeney, Dr. Adam Sweeney, Nicholas and Chelsea Chase, Danielle and Meghan Chase; also, one great-granddaughter, Harper Jean Russell; and sisters-in-law: Lucy and Shirley Sinclair. Childs, Raymond C. Raymond C. Childs, 71 of Gainesville, Texas, passed away May 1, 2012. He was born Oct. 31, 1940, in Salamanca, N.Y., to DeForest and Ada Marie (Fedick) Childs. Raymond worked in law enforcement in the state of New York and Florida. He was a member of the Retired New York State Troopers Association and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles and attended First Baptist Church of Dimmitt, Texas. She moved to Leesburg in April 1996 from Hamburg, N.Y., and became active in tennis and bridge at Highland Lakes and also enjoyed sewing and cooking. Chubb, Ernest A. �Bud� RANDOLPH - Ernest A. "Bud" Chubb, 95, of Church Street, ER, Randolph, passed away Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012, at the Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing Center in Greenhurst, N.Y. He was born Feb. 23, 1916, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of the late Adolph and Rose Schmid Chubb. Moving to Randolph in 1920, he attended a one-room schoolhouse and later bought a Dairy Farm on Bowen Road in Randolph that he and his wife Betty operated for many years. He had also worked for the Town of Randolph Highway Department, East Randolph Feed and Supply and the Randolph Aeolian Foundry. He was a lifelong member of the former Randolph Grange, Randolph Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 2273 and the Steamburg Milk Cooperative. He was a former communicant of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Randolph. He was well known throughout the area for his music, playing the mandolin in the Chubb Family Band, playing for the elderly at many area nursing homes and manors. They also played often at the Mountain Depot in Ellington and for square dances, anniversaries and parties. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Elizabeth L. "Betty" Smith Chubb, whom he married on June 28, 1939, in Randolph; three daughters: Patricia Elaine Chubb of Randolph; Carol Marie (Tom) Cushman of Rochester; and Margaret Ann (Jerry) Stimson of Randolph; a son, Joseph (Cindy) Chubb of Randolph; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by infant sisters Marie Agnes Chubb, Irene Chubb and recently a sister; Elsie Mae Reitz on Oct. 13, 2011. She was born Sept. 1, 1931, in Jamestown, the daughter of Alfonso and Mary Grace Trippi Papaserge. She had been employed at the former Hills Department Store, and was a member of Saint James Parish, and the Jamestown and Carroll Senior Citizens. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Salvatore Civiletto Sr., whom she married July 25, 1953, at Saint James; two brothers: Salvatore 'Sam' Papaserge Sr., and Patsy Papaserge; a sister, Dominica 'Millie' Cafaro; and a son-in-law Clarence Robbins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Saint James Parish by the Rev. Darrell Duffy. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Visitation will be private. Clement, James C. James C. Clement, 83, of 2445 Donelson Road, Jamestown, formerly of 2570 Carlson Road, died at 7:55 am Saturday (June 23, 2012) at his home after a lengthy battle with prostate cancer. A lifelong area resident, he was born December 16, 1928, in Jamestown, the son of the late Lyle and Bessie Faulk Clement, husband to the late Lois Clement whom he married on November 25, 1955. After graduating from Jamestown High School as a member of the honor society and class treasurer in 1947, Jim was drafted into the U.S. Army and spent three years in France to continue the reconstruction after World War II. Upon returning home, he joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 106 in Jamestown. Serving as an officer, trustee and apprentice instructor, he was recently honored with a celebration for 50 years of dedicated service. He is survived by three sons: David C. (Tami Downey) Clement of Jamestown, with whom he made his home since 2010, Jamie C. Clement of Jamestown, and Scott (Ann) Gordon of Frewsburg; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; Lois Lindstrom Clement, who went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 24, 2005; and a brother, Robert Lyle Clement, who went to be with his Lord and Savior on October 23, 2009. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 28, 2012, at the Kiantone Congregational Church. Pastor Melvin R. McGinnis will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery where a committal service will be held in their chapel at 2 p.m. Thursday. She was born in Jamestown, New York on June 14, 1918 the daughter of Robert Eakin Cobbe and Lillian Pearl Burrows. Mildred was known as "Millie" and "Vi" to many. After visiting Florida many years ago, she fell in love with it and soon returned to make it her home. She was preceded in death by her husband Howard F. Coggiola, Margaret M. Cresanti Margaret M. Cresanti Coggiola, 83, of Emeritus of Lakewood formerly of Falconer passed away Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011, in WCA Hospital. A lifelong area resident, she was born Jan. 26, 1928, in Falconer, the daughter of the late Patsy and Ida Giambrone Passanise. Margaret attended Falconer High School and in earlier years was employed by National Worsted Mills, Lutheran Social Services and the former Our Lady of Loreto Catholic Church as a cook. Prior to retirement she was employed by The Post-Journal for 18 years retiring in 1993. She was a member of Our Lady of Loreto Catholic Church and was a member of the church choir for over 40 years. Margaret loved and enjoyed her family. She enjoyed cooking and baking, reading books and going to the casino once in awhile. She is survived by her second husband, P. Louis Coggiola, whom she married May 21, 1993, in Our Lady of Loreto Catholic Church; three daughters: Judy C. Cresanti of West Seneca, Cynthia M. (Darryl) Hinsdale of Jamestown and Debra A. Cresanti of Cheektowaga; two step-sons: Peter (Deborah) Coggiola of Silver Springs, N.Y. and John (Jill) Coggiola of Liverpool, N.Y.; step-daughter Celeste (James) Straka of Dallas, Ga.; two grandchildren: Lisa M. Colburn, Lurabel L. Lurabel L. Colburn, a well-known and popular artist, died Sunday, May 20, 2012, in her home in Bemus Point. She was 95. During her lifetime in Ohio, New York and Florida, she painted or drew more than two thousand portraits, landscapes and still lifes. Though she did commissioned sketches until age 92, her last major work was an oil portrait of Judge Robert H. Jackson, which she painted for the Jackson Center at the age of 86. A lithograph of the portrait hangs in the war trials courtroom in Nuremberg, Germany. Born Sept. 22, 1916, in Lakewood, Ohio, she was the only child of the late Francis and Cora Long, parents who fostered her talent early in life. She studied portraiture and fine arts at The Cleveland Institute of Art, supplementing her scholarship by sketching patrons at the Statler Hotel and the Great Lakes Exposition. Though offered post-graduate study in Paris, she chose to marry Walter J. Colburn and move to Western New York. When their three children were all in school, she resumed her art career, including teaching adult education art in a one-room school house for the Bemus Point school system. As a member of the Swedenborgian Church, also known as the New Church, and an associate member of the Bemus Point United Methodist Church, Lurabel believed that we are defined by what we love and are called to a life of usefulness. Accordingly, she adored her husband of 59 years and her family, followed by her love of art, and then useful and enjoyable activities such as dancing, sailing, traveling, sewing and singing. She particularly enjoyed being a member of the Bemus Point Study Club, serving as its president for two years. In her last four years, her home became a haven for Hospice workers, care-givers and visitors who were warmed by her love and humor. Lurabel is survived by her three children: David (Jo Ann) Colburn, Bruce (Bonnie) Colburn and Martha (Charles) Hill, all of Bemus Point; eight grandchildren: Laura Colburn of Kisaichi, Japan, Charles Colburn of Seattle, Wash., Patricia (Kevin Verbosky) Colburn of New York City, Craig (Jill) Colburn of Bemus Point, Jeff (Marian) Colburn of Bemus Point, Barry (Michael Dent) Hill of Amherst, N.Y., Greg (Ann) Hill of Falls Church, Va., and Elizabeth (Lou) DiMattia of Lawrenceville, N.J.; and 10 great-grand-children: Christine and Minori Hata, Colin and Frank Colburn, Caitlyn and Liam Colburn, Erin and Nathan Hill and Charlotte and Walter Hill. She will also be missed by her caregivers and Hospice workers who were also family to her, especially Jean Anderson who cared for her lovingly for many years. Lurabel was preceded in death by her husband, Walter J. Colburn, whom she married Aug. 13, 1938, and who died June 16, 1998. A memorial service will be held at Bemus Point United Methodist Church the first week of July at a time to be announced by the Lind Funeral Home. A lifelong area resident, she was born March 22, 1928, in Jamestown, N.Y., a daughter of the late John and Clara Peterson Ecklund. Lorraine was a 1946 graduate of Jamestown High School and was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church. In earlier years, she had worked with her father at Eck Tool Company and later at the former Unigard Insurance Company. She had been an active volunteer at the former Jamestown General Hospital and also at the St. Susan Center. She will be remembered as a loving and caring mother and grandmother who loved to spend time doing crossword puzzles. Surviving are two sons: John F. (Cheryl) Collins, Jr. and Mark J. Collins, both of Jamestown: three grandchildren: Kimberly Collins and Taylor Collins, both of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Theo Collins of Fredonia, N.Y., and one great-grandchild, Juliana Collins of Pittsburgh. She was born Oct. 27, 1928, in Leon the daughter of the late Earl and Elizabeth Abbie Merchant Harvey. She was a 1948 graduate of Randolph Central School. Mrs. Colson retired in 1983 from the JN Adams Developmental Center in Perrysburg, and was a homemaker and mother. She was a member of the Gowanda American Legion Post 409 Auxiliary, Cherry Creek Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 2522 Auxiliary, a former member of the South Dayton American Legion Auxiliary and the Gowanda Moose Lodge. She enjoyed dancing, crocheting, knitting, traveling and spending time with family and friends. She is survived by a daughter, Brenda K. (Randy Stankey) Craig of South Dayton; a son, Terry Colson of Gowanda; daughter-in-law, Sandra J. Colson of Batavia; three grandchildren: Robert A. Colson Jr. of Las Vegas, Jennifer Obon of Jacksonville, Fla. and Seaman Abbie Craig, U.S. Navy, Pensacola, Fla.; two great-grandchildren: Katelin and Joshua Obon; and her companion, Ed Jay. Constantine, Gust Thomas Gust Thomas Constantine, 94, of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Jamestown, N.Y., passed away Thursday (May 24, 2012), in the Valley Hospital Medical Center, Las Vegas. A resident of Long Beach, Calif., for most of his life, he was born April 24, 1918, in Jamestown, N.Y., a son of the late Thomas and Chrisula Zdrulli Constantine. He entered the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 and served from 1936 to 1944 and was discharged as a pharmacist's mate first class during World War II. He saw combat during the battles of Guadalcanal and New Georgia, being attached to the Marine Corps as a field medic and also in charge of releasing injured Marines and sending them back to the United States. For the last two years of his service he was part of Admiral "Bull" Halsey's staff, the man in charge of the Pacific fleet during World War II. A testament to his values and character is the fact that in 1979 at the age of 61, and already a successful businessman, he got his high school diploma from San Pedro High School in California. Before retiring to Las Vegas, he was a business owner in Long Beach, Calif., and also served as a steward on the cruise ship "Matsonia," for several years. During his retirement years he loved to play tennis and travel. Surviving are a brother Terry Constantine of Frewsburg, N.Y.; two sisters: Loretta (Ted) Searls of Glendora, Calif., and Virginia Cummings of Jamestown, N.Y.; his caregiver and loving friend for many years, Dimitrios Kladouchos of Las Vegas; and also survived by many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers: Christ, Nicholas and William Constantine; and a sister, Marie Leake. Conti, Grace Grace Conti, 91, of 912 E. Second St., Jamestown, died peacefully Sunday, Nov. 6, 2011, at WCA Hospital. She was born July 15, 1920, in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1923, her parents, Antonino and Sebastiana Calanni moved the family back to Tortorici, Sicily. Grace returned to the U.S. in 1947, and was joined six months later by her husband Rosario, whom she married in 1940, and her two children: Maria and Sebastiano. She would give birth to her third child, Virginia, soon thereafter. Grace had been employed at the former National Worsted Mills, and at Cala's Restaurant. She was active in the Altar & Rosary Society at St. Johns Church. In years past, at its annual St Joseph's Table, her signature homemade bread was greatly anticipated. Cooking for family gave her immense pleasure. The meals she prepared, with that special ingredient no one could duplicate - her love - were the highlights of visits by children and grandchildren. Her meat sauce recipe won first prize at a California regional spaghetti sauce cook-off contest, besting competition from professional chefs! Grace was a woman of strong Roman Catholic faith. She welcomed guests into her home with warmth, and always found the good in people. She particularly loved visits from grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Conti, Josephine M. Josephine M. Conti, 100, of the Frewsburg Rest Home, formerly of 219 South Main St., passed away at 2:25 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 22, 2011), in Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility. A lifelong area resident, she was born July 26, 1911, in Jamestown, N.Y., a daughter of the late Thomas and Catherine DePane Carone. In earlier years, she had worked at the former Empire Worsted Mills for several years. She was a communicant of St James Catholic Church, and will be remembered for her love of baking and cooking, especially for her homemade pasta, cookies and wine. Surviving are her sister Connie Zimbeck of Toledo, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews; as well as great-nieces and great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Cook, Margaret I. Margaret I. Cook, 86, formerly of Sunnyside Road, Jamestown, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, in Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility. She was born in Greenhurst, N.Y., the daughter of Leonard and Irene Roberts Carlson Sr. Margaret attended Bemus Point High School, and for 34 years worked in the menswear department at Sears and Roebuck, retiring in 1987. She loved to knit, crochet, cook and travel. Surviving are a daughter, Linda L. Metcalf of Port Saint Lucie, Fla.; two granddaughters: Cari (Rick) Kinney of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Nichole (John) Dunn of Aliquippa, Pa.; a great-grandson, Owen David Kinney of Fort Lauderdale; and a sister, Helen Ingerson of Bemus Point. She was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy E. Coons, Shirley J. Shirley J. Coons, 77, of 340 Delaware Ave., passed away at 7:10 p.m. Wednesday (April 25, 2012), in WCA Hospital. An area resident since coming from Aliquippa, Pa., in 1957, she was born Dec. 3, 1934, in Ambridge, Pa., a daughter of the late Clyde Russell and Katherine Kundla Myers. Cooper, Inez A. Inez A. Cooper, 97, formerly of 2833 Hooker Road, Sinclairville, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, in Heritage Village Rehab and Skilled Nursing. She was born Sept. 17, 1914, in Red House, N.Y., a daughter of the late Warren and Ethel Snyder Wright. She was a graduate of Randolph Central School and had worked for Gowanda State Hospital as an aide prior to her retirement. She had been active in the Frewsburg Home Bureau and Frewsburg Senior Citizens in earlier years and had also volunteered at the Kennedy Free Library and WCA Hospital. She enjoyed making crafts and sharing them with her family. Surviving are three children: Sue Oakes of Sinclairville, Kay (Mel) Conklin of South Dayton and Bruce (Darlene) Cooper of Erie, Pa.; 13 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Deland Cooper, whom she married Sept. 25, 1937 and who died September 1969; two sons, David and Gary Cooper; and three sisters, Arlene Miller, Avis Straub and Evelyn Burnside. Coppings, Donald Louis FREDONIA - Donald Louis Coppings, 64, died Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012, at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk, N.Y. He was born June 2, 1947, in Town of East Otto, N.Y., the son of the late Nelson and Yeulla (Woodard) Coppings. Don graduated from Alfred University then attended Rochester Institute of Technology and graduated from University of Buffalo. He worked at Seidman and Seidman in Jamestown, before starting his own firm, Donald L. Coppings CPA. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era having attained the rank of Spc. 5. Enlisting on Jan. 8, 1968, at Salamanca, N.Y., and discharged on Jan. 7, 1971, at Ft. Jackson, S.C. He was a past member of the Pine Valley Lions Club. He is survived by his wife, Susan M. Tutton Coppings of Fredonia, N.Y., whom he married on July 6, 1970; a son, Joshua P. (Melissa LeBlanc) Coppings of Fredonia, N.Y.; a daughter, Amber D. (Adam Shreckheise) Coppings of Pittsburgh, Pa.; his brothers: William Coppings of Tennesse, Robert Coppings of Kentucky, and Richard Coppings of Tennesse; and several nieces and nephews. Corkery, Catherine Y. �Kay� Catherine Y. "Kay" Corkery of 3421 Caughey Road, Erie Pa., formerly of Jamestown, died at home Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, after a brief illness, surrounded by her family. A native of Jamestown, she was born April 10, 1937, a daughter of Lemier Alphonse Benoit and Mary E. "Bessie" McAvoy Benoit. She was a 1955 graduate of Jamestown High School and a 1958 graduate of Mercy School of Nursing, Buffalo, N.Y. As a registered nurse for over 40 years, Kay worked at many hospitals including Mercy Hospital, Buffalo N.Y., The Rusk Institute of Spinal Rehabilitation, New York, N.Y., and WCA Hospital, Jamestown N.Y., retiring from there as nursing supervisor in 1999. Kay enjoyed traveling, gardening, bird watching, attending the annual Mercy girls reunion, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed the many family pets over the years, including her most recent and special canine companion, Bandit. Kay will always be remembered by those who knew her as loving, compassionate, optimistic and easygoing. Surviving are three children: Karry Y. (Don) Camp of Erie, Pa., Todd E. Courtney, Charles D. "Don" Sr. August 29, 2012 FALCONER - Charles D. "Don" Courtney Sr., 96, of the Levant-Gerry Road, Falconer, passed away Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa. Mr. Courtney was born June 9, 1916, in Providence, R.I., the son of the late Peter James Courtney and Mary Ann Hughes Courtney. Don attended school in Rhode Island prior to serving his country in the U.S. Army, under Gen. George Patton, where he served as a platoon sergeant with the 119th Infantry Division from Feb. 2, 1942, until he was honorably discharged on Nov. 11, 1945. Mr. Courtney received the Bronze Star, World War II Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Ribbon with three bronze stars. Prior to his military service he had worked for Brown & Sharp in Providence and as a draftsman for Spencer Lens in Buffalo. Upon his return, he worked for United Lumber in Jamestown, and then started his longstanding career with Crescent Tool in Jamestown, where he was employed from Oct. 20, 1947, to April 30, 1978, where he also served as a past president of their labor union. Although he did not attend church regularly, Don had a very strong and humble faith. Mr. Courtney's legacy is his family, he always stated that his best investment in life was his family, which he loved dearly and with whom he spent much of his time. He enjoyed remodeling and doing carpentry around his house, ballroom dancing, reading, classical music, lifelong learning and he had a passion was for politics. He was a former member of the Jamestown Veteran of Foreign Wars Post and the Lakewood Rod & Gun. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Adria Miller Congdon Courtney, whom he married Aug. 29, 1945, in Buffalo; a son, Charles D. Courtney Jr. and his wife, Jackie, of Falconer; four daughters: Mary Ann Courtney Keyser of Cassadaga, N.Y., Barbara June Courtney Washburg and her husband, James, of Falconer, Maureen Kay Courtney Mayer of Falconer, and Carol Adria Courtney of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Rodney B. Congdon and his wife, Marilyn, of Depew; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sons: infant, James Peter Courtney and Brian James Courtney in 2009; and two brothers: James Leonard Courtney and John Stanley Courtney. Crandall, Beverly J. "Jill" Beverly J. "Jill" Crandall, 93, of 19 Bemus St., Bemus Point, N.Y., passed away at 8:45 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, in her home. She was born Oct. 31, 1917, in Jamestown, N.Y., the daughter of the late Oscar G. and Anna E. Olson Carlson. Jill was a graduate of Jamestown High School and earned her bachelor's degree from Houghton College in 1939. She also completed graduate work in English from the University of Rochester. Before her retirement she was an English teacher in several school districts for over 25 years, retiring from the Brockport Central High School, Brockport, N.Y. in 1983. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and will be remembered as a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved to cook and spend time with her family. She was also an avid reader, a lover of animals and enjoyed working outdoors. Crandall, Lois S. Lois S. Crandall, 81, of 81 East Terrace Ave., Lake-wood, N.Y., passed away at 12:50 a.m. Tuesday (Jan. 17, 2012), in WCA Hospital. A lifelong area resident, she was born Jan. 25, 1930, in Jamestown, N.Y. a daughter of the late Robert J. and Hazel Anderson Sederholm. She was a graduate of Jamestown High School, and was very active in organizing the yearly high school reunion. Before retirement, she had worked for the former Herbert's Shoe Store and also was a bookkeeper for her husband at Crandall's Drug Store in Randolph, N.Y., for many years. In earlier years, she had worked as an operator for the former Jamestown Telephone Company. Lois was a member of the Lakewood United Methodist Church, Lakewood Women's Club, the Norden Women's Club, Thule Lodge, the Marvin Community House, Y.W.C.A., Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, the Jamestown Shrine Club Auxiliary, the Randolph Eastern Star and was still meeting with her childhood women's club. She also enjoyed volunteering for many years at WCA Hospital and for Creche. Surviving are a son Steven R. (Kristy) Crandall of Maryville, Tenn.; a daughter, Cynthia J. Crandall, Ruth Wester MAYVILLE - Ruth Wester Crandall, 94, formerly of 57 Evans St., Mayville, and for the past four years she was at the Chautauqua County Home in Dunkirk, died Tuesday (December 20, 2011, in Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk. She was born September 2, 1917, in Westfield, the daughter of the late August and Irene Knowlton Wester. She lived in Chautauqua County for all of her life. Ruth attended the Summerdale one room school and graduated from Sherman Central School in 1936. Ruth had worked at Kling's Furniture Factory in Mayville during the 1950s, BOCES and at First National Bank in Mayville. She also worked at the Chautauqua County Offices, starting at the Motor Vehicle's Office and retiring from the Finance Department. She was a member of the Mayville United Methodist Church, William L. Travis American Legion Auxiliary in Mayville, Lake Chautauqua Memorial Post VFW Auxiliary in Mayville, Mayville Senior Citizens, and she had volunteered at the Mayville Public Library. She is survived by three children: David (Nancy) Crandall of Sebring, Fla., Patricia (Ted) Faust of Wrightsville, Pa. and Sharon Crandall of Dunkirk, N.Y.; three grandchildren: Marcia Velker of Euclid, Ohio, Lisa Blum of Mebane, N.C., and Sandy Osman of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Maris and Will Osman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd R. Crandall, whom she married June 30, 1937, at the Chautauqua Gorge on Lyons Road, and who died July 22, 2005; one grandson, David Crandall; and two sisters, Geraldine George and Gertrude Brumagim. Crane, Jean Jean Crane, 88, of 3023 Route 430, Greenhurst, N.Y., formerly of Sherman, N.Y., died Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011, at Heritage Green Rehab & Skilled Nursing. She was born April 24, 1923, in Fredonia, N.Y., the daughter of the late George D. and Anna Smith Edmunds. She was raised and attended school in Sherman, N.Y. She was employed as a secretary at the Sherman Steam Mills for many years. Jean was a longtime member of the Sherman Community Church where she was a member of the Women's Circle and XYZ. She also belonged to Rebekah's Lodge. She liked to watch old TV shows and cowboy movies, knitting, and camping. She enjoyed the Coffee Clutch at local Sherman restaurants. Jean also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and her family. Jean is survived by two sons; Bob (Kathy) Crane, and Richard (Karen) Crane, Daughter Barbara (Mike) Field, all of Sherman, N.Y. eight grandchildren; Douglas (Rose) Crane, Rick (Tammy) Crane, David (Jody) Crane, Daren (Dee) Crane, Debbie Crane, Chris (Kim) Crane, Michelle (Cory) Emory, Greg (Dawn) Field; and 18 great-grandchildren. Crippen, Vernon L. August 28, 2012 Vernon L. Crippen, 67, of 4 Corral Drive, Youngsville, Pa., formerly of Lottsville-Niobe Road, went home to be with his heavenly father, Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012, while surrounded by his family at his residence. Vernon was born in Warren, Pa., on Feb. 24, 1945, a son of the late Hazel I. (Haight) and Arthur L. Crippen. He was employed as a tool and die maker at Ecco Machine in Lakewood, N.Y., and also had previously worked at Corry Manufacturing for many years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War era. He was a member of the E.U.M. Church in Youngsville. He voluntered at the Lottsville Cemetery. and also worked with the Youth Fellowship at the EUM Church. He was the husband of Sylvia L. (Bowers) Crippen, who survives him. Also surviving are a daughter, Vicky (David) Whitford of Youngsville, Pa.; a sister, Veda Stubbs of Jamestown, N.Y.; four grandchildren: Mikayla Dyer, Ethan Dyer, Aaron Whitford, and Amanda Whitford; two aunts; one uncle; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother; and three sisters. Friends will be received Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at McKinney Funeral Homes in Youngsville. Crouse, Dorothy Mrs. Dorothy Crouse, 91, formerly of Steamburg, N.Y., died Friday evening, April 27, 2012, at the Absolute of Salamanca, Salamanca, N.Y., following a long illness. Born Feb. 8, 1921, in Buffalo, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Winifred Printup. She was married to Mr. Arthur D. Crouse, who predeceased her in October 1976. She was an enrolled member of the Seneca Nation of Indians and the Turtle Clan. She was a fluent Seneca speaker. She worked various jobs within the Seneca Nation and was a homemaker. She was an avid baker, quilter and enjoyed gardening. She was a former of the Emmanuel Missionary Church in Steamburg. Surviving are six daughters: Karen Veccilo, Los Angeles, Calif; Nancy (Willard) Moyer, Rixford, Pa., Shirley "Chic" (Tyler) Heron, Salamanca, N.Y., Linda Crouse, Crested Bute, Colo., Michelle (Bill) Snyder, Steamburg, N.Y., and Susan George, Salamanca, N.Y.; two sons: Michael (Mary Kay) Crouse, Steamburg, N.Y., and Allen (Sue) Crouse, Steamburg, N.Y.; 23 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, four great-great- grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two daughters: Judith John and Patty Crouse, a son, Arthur L. Crouse, a brother, Robert Kerwin, and a sister, Elaine Good. There will be no visitation. Curtin, Thomas R. Thomas R. Curtin, 91, of Amherst, died Jan. 10, 2012, in Roswell Park. He was the son of Harry W Curtin and Olive (Manaher) Curtin. Dear father of Elizabeth Curtis of Dewittville, N.Y., Thomas M. Curtin of Baton Rouge La., and Janice Williams of Longwood Fla. Beloved companion of Trudy Deters of North Tonawanda. Grandfather of six grandchildren: Nathan Curtis, Robert Williams, Candy Snipes, Rachael Curtin, Alex Curtin and Katy Curtin, nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was the husband of the late Jackie Curtin, who died in 1993; and brother of the late Harry W. Curtin Jr. He was a 1939 graduate of Lafayette High School in Buffalo and graduated from the University of Buffalo with a Masters of Economics in his 80s. For many years was an active member of the Moose Club, and also served as a volunteer fireman in Hartfield, N.Y., in his earlier years. He was retired as a supervisor from the New York State Thruway. He also served as a steward "scullion" in the Coast Guard during World War II aboard the SS Mariposa. Friends may call at the Fretthold Funeral Home Inc., 1241 Oliver St. at Ward Road in North Tonawanda, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Prayers will be said at the funeral home on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. from St. Jude Roman Catholic Church.
