Joseph Whilden and Hannah Gorham

Hannah Gorham is the daughter of John Gorham and Desire Howland of Massachusetts and the granddaughter of John Howland, who was born in England and sailed on the Mayflower to Plymouth Massachusetts in 1620. Hannah was the first member of the Howland family to move to Cape May New Jersey. She and Joseph were in Cape May by 1690 and were buried at the site of the first "town" and buried in a location close to the shore and has since been lost to us due to the toll erosion and time have taken on the shoreline.
Aaron Leaming, a descendant of Joseph and Hannah said: "In 1734 I saw the graves; Samuel Eldredge showed them to me. They were then about 50 rods from the bay, and the sand was blown to them. The town was between them and the water. There were some signs of the ruins of the houses."
The author, Paul S. Howe goes on to say: "It is probable the first graves were not marked by stones, and the first village of the first settlers of Cape May has long been swallowed up by the encroaching sea."

Hannah Gorham is the daughter of John Gorham and Desire Howland of Massachusetts and the granddaughter of John Howland, who was born in England and sailed on the Mayflower to Plymouth Massachusetts in 1620. Hannah was the first member of the Howland family to move to Cape May New Jersey. She and Joseph were in Cape May by 1690 and were buried at the site of the first "town" and buried in a location close to the shore and has since been lost to us due to the toll erosion and time have taken on the shoreline.
Aaron Leaming, a descendant of Joseph and Hannah said: "In 1734 I saw the graves; Samuel Eldredge showed them to me. They were then about 50 rods from the bay, and the sand was blown to them. The town was between them and the water. There were some signs of the ruins of the houses."
The author, Paul S. Howe goes on to say: "It is probable the first graves were not marked by stones, and the first village of the first settlers of Cape May has long been swallowed up by the encroaching sea."
