Thomas VIVION "the Immigrant"

15 Apr 1627 - 1670

ID Number: I65317

  • RESIDENCE: ENG; Isle of Wight, VA
  • BIRTH: 15 Apr 1627, St. Columb Major, Cornwall, England [S2539]
  • DEATH: 1670, Isle of Wight, Virginia
  • RESOURCES: See: [S1707] [S2539]

Family 1 : Mary OWEN
  1. +John VIVION I

Notes

"1. THOMAS6 VIVION* (HANNIBAL5 VYVYAN*, HANNIBAL4, JOHN3, JOHN2, MACHAEL1 UNKNOWN) was born 15 April 1627 in St. Columb Major, Cornwall, ENG, and died 1670 in Isle of Wight, VA. He married MARY OWEN Bef. 1663. She was born Bet. 1613 - 1636, and died Bet. 1658 - 1724. Said to have been a general in the English Army and to have served with honor before his age of retirement.

Perhaps the move to America brought about a change in the spelling of the name from VIVIAN to VIVION. One branch of the family, whose ancestor Richard was knighted by King Charles I in 1636, occupies Trelowarren Manor in Cornwall, and they have spelled the name VYVYAN for centuries. In 1999, only the spellings VIVIAN and VYVYAN are found in the UK telephone directory, with the VIVIANs being in the majority. A correspondent says that there is a Cornish saying, "The Vivians with I's would give their eyes to be Vivians with Y's."

There was a Joel VIVION b. 1620 who obtained 50 acres 21 Sept 1638 for transporting John Greenfield. The land adjoined the land of Thomas Smith. This is recorded in the VA Land Office in patent Book 1, Page 597. The relationship of this Joel VIVION to John VIVION is not known."
Children:
i. WILLIAM7 VIVION, b. Abt. 1650; d. 1726, Northhumberland Co, VA. Inventory returned 1726.
ii. JOHN (CAPT.) (I) VIVION*, b. Abt. 1655, Cornwall, ENG; d. 4 June 1705, Christ Church, Middlesex Co., VA.
iii. ROBERT VIVION, b. Abt. 1655.
