Cooper Research File Cooper, Christopher -- 1587 Colonist roster
Christopher Cooper was one of the Lost Colonists, he was appointed as an assistant to Governor John White. From reading what can be found on The Lost Colony records Christopher was not accompanied by a wife or child as he is the only Cooper listed. Who was he? How old was he? Where did his family reside in England? Was he married? Was his family substantial with in the community? Did he leave heirs in England?
We know that the Roanoke Colony, an enterprise financed and organized by Sir Walter Raleigh in the late 16th century to establish a permanent English settlement was in 1587. So, we will need to assume here that Christopher Cooper was an adult ranging from 21 years of age to say 40ish. We know from records that the people left at the newly established colony disappeared by 1889 when Governor White returned. We know that the probate courts in England could declare them dead after 7 years of no contact. So research should be started looking for a probate declaration of death on Christopher Cooper. After finding a probate record further research can be decided from there.
