Palestine Cemetery

This well-kept cemtery lies on the E side of the old Santa Fe Trail, which is still called Santa Fe Trial Road, between 92nd and 93rd streets, in Section 25, Township 48 x 33. Being directly on the old trail, perhaps there were burials there in quite early days -- the oldest stone located by the DAR when they read them in 1934 was that of Simeon Davenport, who died in 1843. This stone is no longer in evidence. While there may have been many such earlier burials, the cemetery was not formally established until 1876, when Joel Foree set aside 2 acres for that purpose.

The Palestine Primitive Baptist Church was constituted in 1873 by Isaac Johnson and a few others. It met in the Mastin and Heart Grove schoolhouses until Joel Foree offered them a permanent site at the cemetery grounds in 1881. The church stood there until Dec. 30, 1925 when it burned. The foundation area may still be traced where now a memorial patio, with benches and flagpole, presetnly stands, dedicated "in loving memory of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Johnson, 1957".

The cemetery grounds are approximately 250 feet by 400 feet and are fenced, with a semi-circular drive between the 2 gates. Burials are still continuing there today, particularly in the new Southern portion.

In the NE corner is a memorial stone that reads: "in memory, Edith Talley Davis, Oct. 18, 1909, Nov. 16, 1987. Who dedicated so much time and effort to the preservation and care of Palestine cemetery. Edith is missed by all."
