Many of the cemeteries that were located in Shawnee
Bend were moved to a combined cemetery when Truman Lake and Dam were built. I think that includes
the Stewart and Downing at least. Is there a map showing all of the cemeteries in Shawnee Bend.?
Many of my ancestors were in the cemeteries that were covered by the waters of the lake (or moved to
make room for the Country Club golf course!!!) There are quite a few family stories about my mothers
cousins causing the "feds" untold grief because they weren't moving the entire grave. According to my
mother's cousins (who are now themselves deceased) the government only moved about a coffee can full
of dirt about 3 feet down and called that "moving a grave". I know they were very indignant that their
ancestors were not "totally" moved. I am not sure what the combined cemetery is called, but I think it is
Shawnee Bend Cemetery. I should have paid more attention the times I have been there. My great great
grandparents are buried there, as are many other relatives....Ferguson's, Stewart's, Bledsoe's, etc If anyone has further knowledge of the grave movings and cemeteries please email Marilyn or Ann |
