CONNOR/CONNER

After a number of years researching my family I find that my g.g.g. grandfather Thomas CONNOR (CONNER) and his first wife were married in New Ulm, Brown Co. on the 15th of September, 1869. Prior to finding this information I was only able to determine that they resided and died in Currie, Murray County,. MN. I've been searching for a few years to find out where they married and happy with today's findings. A couple of reasons for my posting. Is there anybody that could tell me why New Ulm? I know Thomas CONNOR was a raised Catholic. Could it have been that there was a Catholic Church there at that time and not in Currie? I know in local Currie newspapers that Thomas and his wife were considered pioneers in Currie. Was New Ulm a jumping off point for land sales etc. in Currie? So many questions I have now. Lastly, is there a kind New Ulm soul that could make enquires with respect to their marriage. Possibly an agent or court house that may house their marriage documents etc.? DOEHNE/GRAESER/GREFE

My great grandparents, Fred and Dora Heisey HEERS were early settlers in New Ulm , c. 1854. I am searching for the DOEHNE, GRAESER and GREFE families to verify their relationships to the Heers family. Two of Fred's brothers Wilhelm (William) and Carl (Charles) also settled in the New Ulm area. Great grandfather Fred was a violin and cabinet maker. Some of his work survives in New Ulm .Great uncle Carl was an architect and contractor. Some of his buildings still remain. Great aunts Ida and Herta were teachers. Ida in New Ulm, and Herta in New Jersey. Great uncle Fred , an accomplished musician (violin) was an accountant/bookkeeper. He died in his mid twenties or so. My grandfather, Ernst was a Turnmaster, his lifelong career. He settled in Boston, married and had four sons. Cedric Heers was my father. We have enjoyed our trips to New Ulm, but it is a long way and there are so many questions. Hope we can share our discoveries. Carol Heers Sislane 31 Aug 1999

DOLAN, John

I have him and his family settling in Leavenworth in 1870 and homesteading. They were a family of eight and for a time his father, mother and a sister were with them there. It had to be very crowded in their 10' X 14' wooden roofed and wooden floor, one window and one door sod house. Their youngest son William was baptised as an infant at the Japanese Martyrs church. I'm looking for further evidence of the Dolan's in Mulligan Twp, Brown county Minnesota beyond what there is from the 1880 Federal Census, records of the birth of Ellen, Mary Anne and William, and a patent for a tract of land in Mulligan Twp in the 1880's made out to John Dolan. Specifically, I would like to find burial sites for Thomas and Mary Dolan who were born in Ireland between 1809 and 1815. They are listed in the 1880 Federal census in Mulligan and that is the last information I have on them. Any information about the family would of course be very much appreciated. Many thanks. FINK/MCMONAGLE

I am trying to research my grandmother's (father's mother) parents. My grandmother is buried in Springfield (Brown County), Minnesota and I was always told that she moved from Moose Lake to southern Minnesota. Her name was Iva Luella McMONAGLE. She was born in Martin County, Minnesota on November 4, 1871, but Martin County has no record of her birth. I am assuming that she moved with her parents from Martin County to Moose Lake (Carlton County) sometime in the later years of the 19th Century. I was always told that she moved from Moose Lake to the Springfield area, and it was in Springfield that she met and married my grandfather Henry FINK. The couple lived in Sanborn (Redwood County) Minnesota for many years. It is in Sanborn where my father was born and raised. I am trying to find out information about her (my Grandmother Iva) and her parents. I do not know her parents names, where they lived, what they did, or where they are buried. I do not know if they ever even lived in the Brown County/Redwood County area. Growing up I was always told that they lived in Moose Lake, but I could not find a grave site for them when visiting that community. My Grandmother Iva did have a brother (George) who is buried, along with his wife, in Moose Lake. Any help of assistance you can provide certainly will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. HEMPEL

I would be interested to see if I have a connection to the Emil Hempel family that lived in New Ulm. My great grandmother was Augusta Hempel, she married Carl Wellnitz and resided in Grant County South Dakota. Augusta was born in March 1875 and her obit says she came from Germany to Wood Lake MN with her parents when she was 12 years old. When she died in June 1939 it states she had 3 sisters and 2 brothers still living. Reading Emil Hempel's 1920-1930 census info and his entry in the MN Death Index lead me to believe his date of birth 12/26/1878 and date of immigration from Germany in either 1886 or 1887 is a close fit for being Augusta's brother. Emil died on 7/22/1959. His wife was Louise (Falk?), she died 12/25/1964. The census lists Daniel and Harold as their sons, Helen and Ruth as daughters. A Harold J Hempel is listed as dying on 12/3/1992 in Brown County. Thanks for any information on this family. Please feel free to contact me at Austin Ladwig 3 August 2004

MAINZER, Peter

I am researching the MAINZER family of Brown County. My great-grandfather was Peter O. MAINZER, b. Sleepy Eye, MN in 1872 to John and Dorothea MAINZER. Peter was a farmer just outside of Sleepy Eye for a short time before he went to Pine County, MN and met and married my great-grandmother, Laura M. WOODFORD. There first child, a daughter, was born in Duluth in 1910, Joanna Lydia MAINZER (who was my grandmother). Peter moved the family to Idaho, to seek fortune in silver mining. In 1913 their second daughter, Dorothy Emma MAINZER, was born in Deary, ID. Around this time Peter apparently abandoned Laura with 2 young children. She left with no other choice, filed for divorce. Peter stayed in Sandpoint, ID, and died alone and penniless in 1935. My grandmother and her sister were raised by their mother and step-father in Eastern Washington state on a wheat farm. Would like to share this story, hoping to connect to others in Brown county related to Peter MAINZER. Elizabeth Hoppe 2 Feb 2003

MARTINE moved his family to Rochester MN for a short time; Isaac and family moved to Brown Co MN and were present there in the 1870 and 1880 census. I believe that they were there through the 1890s, as Civil War pension records indicate that Isaac's widow applied for his pension in 1897 in MN. Anyone connected to this family contact me directly. I am trying to find tombstone/church information on my Peter McKeever who died in Sprngfield, MN Oct 8, 1902 and his wife Anne Carroll McKeever who also died in Springfield in 1895. There girls names were Mary Welch and Elllen (Nellie) Kernan. My records show a son, Thomas McKeever, died in Brown Co in 1942, so the family must have remained in the area for some time. SCHNITZIUS, Peter and Barbara Mary (Lintner)

I was curious if this Surname is listed in any historical information for Brown, Minn. Peter and Barbara Mary(Lintner) Schnitzius both from Prussia (Germany) and their 4 children Mary, Elizabeth, Susanna and Gertrude. The story goes that an Indian had warned Barbara of the attack because at some time earlier she had given food to some Indian families and they were repaying her generosity. The family scattered and were reunited at Fort Snelling after the attack. They did not ever return to the house. This is a story that I was given from a cousin, whom doesnt remember where she heard it. I was hoping to find some proof of the families homestead. I did find a census in 1860 with the family listed in Cottonwood, Brown MN, they were livign with the Simonders and 2 children(Manderfelts) Is there any way to prove that maybe these children where orphans. They settled in New Ulm and are found in the 1870 and 1880 Federal census living in New Ulm. Joseph (my gr-gr grandfather through his son Charles) was born circa 1822 in Bohemia. I am especially interested in info on Joseph's 3 daughters and their descendants as well as the first wife of Charles. Charles married a second time in 1899 to Nathalia Schneider. Nathalia's family lived next to the Stelzners in the 1860 Federal Census. Any help would be much appreciated. Kevin Schultz 15 Dec 2006

SUNDOWN Cemetery Question!

I've been posting a few cemeteries on my web page. Today, someone wrote to me, sounding rather upset that I had listed a tiny little cemetery (one stone and one footstone) as being near Springfield, Brown County). (That is what my microfilm says). This person who disagrees tells me that the SUNDOWN CEMETERY which is one small footstone that says "L.F." and one upright stone that has the names of Dorothea and Laura O'Callaghan died 1879 & 1882) children of P.& M. O'Callaghan. The person that wrote to me assures me that this little "cemetery" is really in Redwood County. Does anyone know for sure? WERSAL

I am researching my mother's side of the family. Her mother, my grandmother, was born Otilia Kathryn WERSAL on 2/21/1902 in Sleepy Eye, Brown County, Minnesota. She was the first born of seven children, all of whom I believe were also born in Sleepy Eye. Her siblings are: Joseph born June 08, 1907; Walt; Mary born February 09, 1903; Gladys; Roy born October 25, 1915; and a baby that died at birth. Their parents are: Joseph WERSAL, born 12/26/1878, some place in Austria and Estelle Adelaide (maiden surname SELLNER), born 1878. From what information I do have, it is believed the family then moved somewhere around 1917 for Montana. It may be possible that my great grandfather Joseph Wersal had brothers who also may have lived in Sleepy Eye or very near there during this same time frame. Then again, maybe his parents were living there too. I did come across a Johann WERSAL from Klosterhumora, Austria, at the Ellis Island genealogy site, who was 33 years old at that time and had come to America on 7/23/1910. Since there is about a year or more difference in the ages between my great grandfather Joseph WERSAL, is it possible that Johann may be an older brother? Joseph had at least two brothers, George and John. (No further information, just the names) There may have been sisters, but I don't know of any. Thank You, Donald Nelson 30 April 2005
