Edmond Scantland Family

Edmond Scantland, according to census records was born about 1773 in Virginia.  Came to Franklin County, Kentucky and first appeared in the county records on the tax list of May 1795.  On 16 of August 1796 in Franklin County, Edmond married Anna Hawkins, daughter of William Hawkins, Sr. and his first wife Mary, of Culpeper County, Virginia.  Research will show close relationship with more than one Hawkins family.  Edmond's first land purchase is recorded in Franklin County, Deed Book A, page 141.  He purchased from Uriah Edwards and wife, for the sum of 6 pounds, a parcel of land 40 foot by 20 foot with half an 18 foot square house and described as being in the county of Franklin on the road leading from Frankfort to Georgetown.  By 1803, Edmond Scantland had somehow acquired 200 acres of land.  Reported on the tax list as first rate land, water course, Cedar Run.  No deeds in Franklin County have been located for this land.  In Deed Book 1, page 342, dated 10 August 1838, Edmond Scantland and wife Anna, for the sum of $2,500.00 sell to Joseph Roberts 100 acres of land known as Franklin Springs.

Edmond Scantland died in Franklin County, Kentucky sometime between 27 September 1851 and November 1851.  On 27 August 1851 he wrote his last will and testament.  One month to the day he made a codicil to this will.  His will is recorded in Franklin County Will Book 2, page 228 and probate in Franklin Court November 1851.  This will does not name his wife Anna.  Evidently, she preceded him in death.  However, the will does name six children; Sarah B. Crutcher, Azubah Hawkins, wife of William W. Hawkins, of Woodford County, Kentucky; John Scantland, Edmond Scantland, G. Washington Scantland, O. H. P. Scantland.  Also, a grandson, Edmond, son of O. H. P.

At some point, Edmond had acquired land in Henderson County, Kentucky.  In his will he gives to his son G. Washington land he is now living on in Henderson County.  The will implies that Edmond may have had some displeasure with the actions of his sons, Edmond and O. H. P.  He leaves to son Edmond Scantland the money he took out of the bank at Frankfort.  If son, O. H. P. doesn't obey and treat his father the way he wishes he will not share in the estate.  He also wants his grandson, Edmond to be allowed to remain with him. In Franklin County Deed Book 5, pages 417-18 on 26 November 1855, William W. Hawkins, acting as administrator of the will annexed of Edmond Scantland, deceased, sells to Thomas Farmer 131 acres of land for the sum of $2,238.50.

Edmond Scantland lived his life in Franklin County, Kentucky where he was listed on census 1800 - 1850 with his wife and children.  No death date has been located for Anna Hawkins Scantland nor a burial place for Anna or Edmond.  It is very possible they were buried in a family graveyard on their land.  Over the years, before family graveyards were protected by law, many were destroyed and plowed over for farm land or urban expansion.  During their married life in Franklin County, Edmond and Anna raised six children to live to adulthood.  Only one son, John "Jack" Scantland left heirs here in Franklin County.  The other five children migrated to other counties and states.
