Metcalf - Mrs. Geo. Peerson returned home Wednesday from Purdy, Mo., where she had been at the bedside of her sick father, who passed away Monday evening, June 7, at 6:30 o'clock. The death angle visited the home of J.M. Jones or Purdy, Mo., and claimed one among the noblest and sweetest fathers on earth. Hiram Metcalf was born January 2, 1833, died June 7, 1920, age 87 years, 5 months, and 5 days. He was born and reared in Lurel County, Kentucky and was married to Mary Ann Gabbard, who preceded him to the home of eternal life 36 years ago. He united with the Primitive Baptist Church when a young man and has lived a pure and steadfast Christian life in love for his Master. He traveled the rugged paths of life and until time to cast all burdens away and the Good Lord said, "Come," he was ready with the bright face of an angel to welcome the eternal rest. He requested his children to be good to each other as he could not take them with him. There was not one flower that covered his casket that was more pure and sweeter than his noble life.
He left nine children and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his departure, but we feel our loss is for his eternal gain. Bro. Goodnight of Purdy had charge of the funeral services which was delivered in the pure spirit. Deceased was a Union soldier in the Civil war, was 1st Lieut. in Co., E, 47th Regiment of Kentucky of Capt. H.J. Clark's infantry volunteers. He is the father of twelve children, nine of whom survive him, four boys and five girls, who are: Elijah of Cassville, Mo., Elisha of Powell, Mo., Ruben of Shade, Ky., John of Irvin, Ky., Mrs. Fred Pond of Vinita, Oka., Mrs. A.J. Land of Neosho, Mo., Mrs. S.L. Lady of Powell, Mo., Mrs. Geo. Peerson of Springdale, Ark., and Mrs. J.M. Jones of Purdy, Mo. He was grandfather to 73 grand children, 101 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. His grandchildren acted as pall bearers.
The casket was covered with the most beautiful flowers from friends. He was loved by all who knew him. We feel that our loss is only Heaven's gain. May God bless and help his loved ones in their hours of bitter sorrow. A precious one from us has gone, A voice we loved is stilled; A place is vacant in our home, That never can be filled.
