The James Brennan and Ellen Roberts Family of Huddersfield England and James' Family with Margaret Carter (Whom he Married After the Death of Ellen in 1889) in England Census and Other Records
James Brennan was the son of Patrick Brennan and Ellen Morris who were immigrants from Ireland and were employed in the Grocery business in Huddersfield (like James). James was born in Huddersfield around 1843 (there are two possible birth records supporting this in the free BMD for England; James Brannan June 1843- most likely and James Bramman December 1844). It appears that James married Ellen Roberts (who hailed from Holmfirth, England) in Huddersfield the quarter ending June 1865. They appear to have had a son Edward (who died around 1873), and then four more children (Ellen, John Henry, James Edward and Mary Hannah) before Ellen appears to have died in Huddersfield quarter ending March 1889. He then appears to have married Margaret Carter (from Warrington, Lancashire, England) in Huddersfield quarter ending March 1891. Her father John Carter, a widow was living with them in the Huddersfield District 3 in the 1891 census as was his unmarried daughter Mary Hannah. James appears to have died between 1901 and 1911 as Margaret is listed as a widow in the 1911 census and is living with Mary Hannah Moyes (daughter of James) and her husband Andrew Moyes whom she married in Huddersfield in 1902 (there daughter Kathleen Mary lives with them as well). Please be sure to confirm the findings and analysis that I have compiled on this page. It was a bit of a challenge to put the different pieces of this puzzle together.
Regarding the Family of Margaret Carter: It appears that Margaret was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Carter and that she was living with them in District 12, working as a Stay finisher in the 1871 Yorkshire, Kirkburton, England Census. She again appears in the 1881 Kirkburon Census in District 12 with them and is listed as a Woolen Weaver. Her father John is living with them in the 1901 census and appears to have died in Huddersfield in the September quarter 1907 at the age of 79.
Research Observations: There was a John William Brannon, son of James, a Green Grocer living on Kirkgate) that died at the age of 2 weeks on February 12, 1866, that may have been their son
My objective in this research is to analyze the Brennan Families in Huddersfield England Census records over the years to see migration pattern trends from certain counties, possible Civil Parishes in Ireland and even with families of the surname itself. I hope to eventually connect them to the Brennans that I am identifying in the Catholic Church Records in both County Mayo and County Roscommon Ireland. This will most definitely be a work in progress and all findings I speculate on would have to be proven for accuracy with GRO of England marriage records, church baptismal records and death records among other genealogical records. Please use this information with that caveat in mind so that nothing is assumed and no stones are left unturned to assure it's your family and the connection is accurate.
