Brannon and Corcoran Family Members Who Died and were Buried in Edgerton Cemetery, Edgerton, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England in the mid 19th Century
The Catholic Emancipation Act was implemented in 1829 bringing a degree of equality to those practicing the Catholic Faith. The Huge influx of Irish into Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England in the early part of the 19th Century led to the construction of St. Patrick's Church in 1832 to support the growing Catholic Irish population.
The Edgerton Cemetery located off Halifax Road in Edgerton, Huddersfield appears to have been developed in late 1855. Despite the implementation of the Catholic Emancipation act earlier in the century, and a relatively amiable relationship between the religious factions in the area, the Cemetery was divided not only based on fees (into 9 different areas) but split in half into consecrated and unconsecrated ground as well. The consecrated ground was generally reserved for followers of the Church of England. There were two different Chapels (one for Church of Ireland followers and one for Catholic Dissenters) that were symbolically joined by an arch.
The Catholic congregation had grown by leaps and bounds, and by 1913 St Patrick's Parish was divided between St Patrick's and St Joseph's Churches. The Cemetery had grown from 4 acres in 1885 to 18 by the year 1918.
There are a number of great resources on-line and in book form with information regarding Edgerton Cemetery and the Huddersfield Irish including the book "The Story of Huddersfield" by Roy Brook, The West Yorkshire Archive Service at Kirklees (has resources on the Edgerton Cemetery Grave Design), Huddersfield One- the Information website has detailed history on Huddersfield and is well worth a look, and the Huddersfield Civil Society has a newsletter from 2008 with details on Edgerton Cemetery and the Huddersfield and District Family History Society is a great resource for research requests and has numerous great publications of parish registers that would be most valuable to Genealogists. Unfortunately there only appears to be a booklet with a few burials associated with St Patrick's Church and no baptismal or marriage records.
SPECIAL KUDOS TO ROS FOR THIS COMPILATION! Roz, a Genealogist from England with Connacht Ireland connections to Huddersfield England (Surnames Lynch and Lally) graciously compiled the data presented below For researchers like myself, across the pond in the U.S. and elsewhere, this act of Genealogical generosity could open doors for many Brennan and Corcoran descendents and is sincerely appreciated!
