I am pleased to assume the responsibility of Editor of The Packet this year and will do my best to continue the quality of the quarterly. The Tri-State Genealogical Society is proud of its continued effort to produce unpublished records of the area and those of general interest to its members. Among the purposes of the Society is the aim to further genealogical interest and improve genealogical skills. These goals are met each year with help sessions before our meetings, a yearly seminar, and a quality journal. The Packet is the link to the area for members who are not local. While I value suggestions from anyone, I especially would like to hear from out-of-state members indicating what type of sources they find most helpful, or those they would like to see in print. Just drop me a line at [email protected] or by snail mail.
Well-documented family material, Bible records, abstracts of primary records, or other data pertaining to this area are solicited. Material is accepted on a 3.5" disk in text-only or Word format and in typed form. Send to TSGS, Att: Packet Editor, c/o Willard Library, 21 First Ave, Evansville, IN 47710. Another year is beginning. September seems to signal a new beginning, even though the leaves will be turning color in another month and for those in the northern states it reminds us to get cars and furnaces winterized. Why not use the changing of the seasons as motivation to get back to looking for answers to your puzzling ancestors. A trip to my home county this summer reminded me of the wealth of unpublished, non-indexed material (not on the Internet, either) that lies in the loose paper files of libraries and archives.
Among the best things I found were letters written by others who are researching the same families. Some included bits of family lore and remembrances from times past, as well as bits of information they have found. I now have at least two more people to write to, asking for answers to some of my questions, as well as the sources for the information they included. I found some short summary write-ups that were never published, of individuals and family groups which give me more clues about them. The loose paper files in one library contain the handwritten copies of the tombstone inscriptions to the county cemeteries. These copies could be a first publishing project for the new genealogical society that has been formed there. Until that happens, they are being preserved and available to anyone for the looking. I know they helped me find tombstone information.
If you are close to Evansville, be sure to check the vertical family files at Willard Library for the surname you are researching. Central Library also has an extensive clipping file of places and business as well as individuals, If you are not nearby, check the vertical files of your own library. This is a great source for information to share with others, If the local society to which you belong (and I hope those of you in California, Illinois, and elsewhere are also active members of a society in your own home town) has a newsletter or journal, your library's vertical files are a source for information to be shared with others through these publications.
Speaking of publications, don't forget to send things to be published in the Packet. Church, cemetery and funeral home records are wonderful sources to be shared by everyone. Voter registration, early deed books, marriage, school records, and a write-up of your early tri-state family, all are the kinds of material we are looking for. We continue to need your help,
