THOMAS HUMBLE-The subject of this sketch was born at Pickering, Yorkshire, England, January 30, 1832, being the eldest son and third child of Peter and Margaret HUMBLE, both of them natives of that town. He received a good common school education, and in 1848 was engaged as salesman in the dry goods department of the house of Messrs. J. & E. WENDLE, general merchants, with whom he remained until the summer of 1853. In the fall following he engaged as salesman for the firm of Messrs. WATSON & DOBSON, wholesale and retail dry goods merchants, at Whelby, with whom he remained until the summer of 1856, the latter part of the time acting as traveling agent for the firm. He emigrated to this country in 1856, arriving in New York July 13th. After visiting Canada, he came to Winchester on the 30th of August, and was engaged as salesman in the dry goods business in this place and at Jacksonville, until October, 1860, when he returned to Winchester and entered into partnership in the grocery and queensware business with Geo. W. Ritchey, under the style and firm of Ritchey and Humble. They were burned out in February, 1861, and the firm dissolved in 1862. He continued in this line of business until January 1, 1868, when, having sold out his interest to Messrs. GALE and OWENS, he engaged as bookkeeper for the firm of Messrs. HAINSFURTHER & BRO., with whom he remained until January, 1871, when a vacancy occurring in the First National Bank, he was offered the cashiership, which he accepted. On February 11, 1862 he was married to Miss E. J. BUSH, daughter of P. C. and Mary Jane BUSH; she was born at Potosi, Missouri, January 9, 1835, but soon afterward her parents moved to this place. Their married life was short, as Mrs. HUMBLE died December 12,1862, leaving an infant daughter only eight days old, who is now living. He was married again, March 8, 1865, to Miss O. E. WHELEHURST, eldest daughter of Jesse G. and Rebecca WHELEHURST, who was born in this county, January 26, 1837. They have five children, all of whom are now living.
