Book 10

Book 10 is 12� x 7 �� x �� thick, and is the Ladies Aid Society record book. Records begin 1920 and go through 1932. The book is in good shape and all intact, and legible. Some interesting charts are printed inside the front and back covers of this book, indicating the book was made while President Wm. Howard Taft was still in office. Some of the types of charts were:

Presidents of the United States from George Washington to Wm. Howard Taft, giving their birthdates, place of nativity, when inaugurated, term of office, and date of their deaths. The only two still alive were Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Wm. Howard Taft.
Help in case of accidents-drowning, burns and scalds, lightning, sun- stroke, mad dog or snake bite, venomous insects� stings, etc., fainting and electricity.
Antidotes for poisons, listing the poisons by name and what to do.
Legal weights-How many pounds per bushel for various vegetables and seeds.
Quantity of seed required to plant an acre.
Domestic weights and measures.
Business law in daily use.
Compound interest on one dollar for 100 years.
Short method for calculating interest.
Carrying capacity of a freight car.
Weight per bushel of grain, etc., listing the various grains and the number of pounds per bushel required by law by the various states.
Interest laws and statutes of limitations for all the states and territories.

The charts were so interesting, I was tempted to type them and include them in the book.

There are 140 pages in the book.

The Cantrall Ladies Aid Society met at the church at an all day meeting. Ten members were present. Time was spent in quilting. In the afternoon the business meeting was called to order by the president. After singing, the Scripture lesson was read by Sister Stackhouse and the Lord�s Prayer repeated in concert. The roll was then called and dues collected. The Treasurer, Mrs. Mellinger, read the yearly treasurer�s report. During the year the Society took in (blank), spent (blank), and had a balance of (blank) in the treasury. It being the regular meeting for the election of officers, the following were elected. President-Mrs. Millie Van Meter, Vice President-Mrs. Clara Dunlap, Treasurer-Mrs. Mellinger, and Secretary-Mrs. Clara Grant. A rising vote of thanks was extended the officers of the past year in appreciation of their faithful and efficient services. It was decided the Ladies Aid Society should pay for roofing the parsonage coal house and should also see Mrs. Carlson in regard to cleaning the church. A new member, Mrs. Chandler was enrolled. The meeting adjourned to meet Jan. 5th.

The Cantrall Ladies Aid met at an all day meeting. Six members were present. The time was spent in quilting. In the afternoon the business meeting was called to order by the President. After singing, the Scripture lesson was read by Mrs. Chandler and the Lords Prayer was repeated in concert. The roll was then called and the minutes of the previous meeting read. Dues were collected to the amount of $2.65. $.65 was deducted to pay for the new Secretary book. Committees were appointed for the coming year. A letter was also read, from Mr. & Mrs. Stackhouse thanking the members of the Ladies Aid for the traveling bag presented to them at Christmas. Meeting was adjourned to meet next regular meeting day.

The Cantrall Ladies Aid met at an all day meeting with Mrs. Stackhouse. Nine members were present. Time was spent quilting on Mrs. Grubb�s quilt. In the afternoon the business was called to order by the President. After singing, the Scripture lesson was ready by Mrs. Stackhouse and prayer was offered by Mrs. Chandler. The roll was called and dues to the amount of $3.35 were collected. The minutes of the previous meeting were read. The committees were again read for the benefit of those absent at the previous meeting. It was voted that the Ladies Aid should pay Bert Claypool for the light repairing instead of taking the money from the church treasury. Preparations were made for the Engal sale to be held Feb. 14. Meeting adjourned to meet next regular meeting day.

The Cantrall Ladies Aid met at an all day meeting at the parsonage. Eleven members were present. Mrs. Grubb�s quilt was finished. In the afternoon, the business meeting was called to order by the President. After singing, the Scripture lesson was read by Mrs. Powers and the Lords Prayer was repeated in concert. The roll was then called and the minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Dues were collected to the amount of $2.30 and Mrs. Grubb paid $2.75 for the quilting of her quilt, making a total of $5.05 taken into the treasury. Plans were made for the sale to be held at Bert Glassock�s Mar. 15th. Mrs. Mellinger invited all the Ladies Aid to an all day meeting at her home Mar. 10 to finish a quilt she had been working on for some time. The meeting adjourned to meet next regular meeting day.

The Cantrall Ladies Aid met at an all day meeting in the church basement. It being election day, lunch was served. $26.20 were cleared from the lunch. Eighteen members were present. The time was spent in quilting and serving food. In the afternoon, the business meeting was called to order by the President. The Scripture lesson was ready by Mrs. Chandler and the Lords Prayer was repeated in concert. The roll was call and minutes of the prev-

ious meeting read and approved. Dues were collected, amounting to $2.40. The treasurer gave a partial report of the finances of the Society, stating that $39.75 had been paid Mr. Stackhouse, making up the deficit at the close of his ministry in Cantrall. $25.00 was also paid Mr. Owen, the visiting minister. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Cantrall Ladies Aid met at an all day meeting at the church. As usual, the time was spent in quilting. In the afternoon, fourteen members were present for the business meeting. After the meeting had been called to order by the President, and after a song had been sung by all, the Scripture lesson was read by Mrs. Powers, who also offered prayer. The roll was then called and minutes of the previous meeting read and approved. Dues were collected to the amount of $1.20. A letter from Mr. Owens was read and the matter of hiring him was discussed, but nothing definite was decided upon. The meeting then adjourned to meet next regular meeting day. There was no business meeting in June, but the meetings were held as usual at the church and the quilts quilted. On June 11, an ice cream supper was held in the church basement, from which $24.66 was realized. On July 2, a supper was held on the Mellinger lawn and $34.00 were cleared.

The Society met and quilted on the regular meeting day. On account of threatening storm, the crowd dispersed before time for the business session.

There was an all day meeting, and time was spent in quilting. At business session in afternoon, the Vice President, Mrs. Dunlap presided. Nine members responded to roll call. The treasurer gave a report. It was decided to paper two rooms of the parsonage. Meeting adjourned to meet again in two weeks.

All day meeting at the church. Time spent in quilting. The afternoon business session was called to order by the Vice-President, Mrs. Dunlap. Eleven members present. Mrs. Allen Cline extended an invitation to all the members, requesting them to meet at her house on September 21, for an all day social meeting. Proceeds from the ice cream supper were $8.00. $3.75 received for Mrs. Huffman�s quilt, also $2.50 for Mrs. Grubbs� quilt. Meeting adjourned to meet the first Wednesday in October. (Oct. 5)

Ladies Aid Society met in basement of church. Day was spent in quilting. Mrs. May Brittin invited the society to meet at her home on November 16th, which they did. Quite a number of the membership were present and an appreciable amount of work was accomplished. Mrs. E. U. Zellars invited the society to meet with her on Nov. 30. All enjoyed a good time and much work was accomplished. Business meeting was called to be at the home of Mrs. Etta Powers on Dec. 7. There will also be an all day quilting at the home of Mrs. Edmund Zellars Dec. 21.



Ladies Aid Society of Cantrall Christian Church met with Mrs. Etta Powers, for the purpose of electing officers for the year 1922. Mrs. Millie Van Meter, President, called the meeting to order with an opening son on the victrola, followed with Scripture reading by Miss Jennie Longerbon. Ten members responded to roll call. After reading of minutes from November meeting and report of Treasurer, election of officers ensued. Mrs. Luie Cline is the new president. Vice-pres., Mrs. Pearl England, Treas., Mrs. Anna Mellinger, Secretaries, Ethel Keefner and Maude White. The oyster supper and bazar was planned for Dec. 17. Meeting Adjourned.


Ladies Aid Society of the Cantrall Christian Church met with Clara Dunlap. Three quilts were worked upon. Mrs. Emma Zellars became a member. The new President, Mrs. Luie Cline, presided at business meeting. There were 14 members and 5 visitors present. The sum of $6.65 was turned in for dues. The Aid Society is to serve lunch at the sale of Mr. Gadis on Feb. 15. After a very enjoyable time, society adjourned to meet with Mrs. Dunlap again on Jan. 26.



February meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Edwin Zellars. On account of stormy weather, only a few members were able to attend. The day was spent in quilting. All enjoyed the good dinner. Meeting adjourned.



Aid society met at the home of Mrs. Anna Mellinger. 14 members and eleven visitors were present. A delicious cafteria lunch was served at noon. The day was spent quilting. Three quilts were worked upon-one being finished. After a pleasant day, society adjourned to meet again Apr. 4 at the church. Election lunch to be served.


Mar. 1st Aid Society met with Lucy Vandergrift on account of inclement weather, only seven members were able to attend. A record was made by the society for quilting one quilt entirely during the day. Some work was also done on another quilt. A delightful repast was served at noon and a good time was reported by all present. Meeting adjourned to be called together again Mar. 14 with Anna Mellinger.

Aid Society met at the church for the purpose of serving the election lunch and quilting. A good attendance was noted. Mrs. Jones became a member. The sum of $2.70 was paid for dues and $2.25 for quilts. It was decided to meet again the following Tuesday at the church and to serve lunch for the primaries.

All day meeting at the home of Maude White. A good attendance was present. Quite a lot of quilting was accomplished. A good dinner was enjoyed by all. The sum of $3.00 was paid in dues, and for quilts $3.25.

The Ladies Aid Society of the Cantrall Christian Church held their regular monthly business meeting at the home of Mrs. Anna Wilcoxen. The gathering was an all day affair and in the afternoon, the members were called together by the President for the business session. After all singing �Blest Be the Tie That Binds� and repeating the Lord�s Prayer in unison, the roll was called to which twelve members responded. This was followed by the Treasurer�s annual report. Mesdames Janie Lloyd and Boone Wilcoxon accepted the invitation to become members of the society. The annual election of officers then took place and those chosen are as follows: President, Mrs. Luie Cline; Vice-president, Mrs. Anna Wilcoxon; Secretary, Jennie Longerbon, and Treasurer, Mrs. Anna Mellinger. $3.50 was received in money for dues and Mrs. Luie Cline was given credit for $.60 which she had expended for a sale lunch. The society adjourned after singing �God Be With You Till We Meet Again� to meet the first Wednesday in January at the home of Mrs. Eugene Zellars.

The Ladies Aid Society of the Cantrall Christian Church held their regular monthly business meeting at the home of Mrs. Eugene Zellars. The society held an all day gathering, dinner being served at noon and in the afternoon, affairs of importance were considered at the business session which was opened by the reading of the first eight verses of the 13th chapter of Matthew by Mrs. Margie Canterbury. Sixteen members and seventeen visitors were present. Five dollars and fifty cents were received in dues from members; a donation of one dollar and eleven cents was received from Mr. Miller and Mr. J. W. Welker; and two dollars and twenty five cents were

Plans were made at the meeting for the two sale dinners which the Society were to serve later in Feb.-one at Haycraft�s and the other at Joe Smith�s. The repairs to be made on the church were also discussed. The Society adjourned to meet the first Wed. of Mar. at the home of Mrs. Anna Mellinger.

The session opened with the song �Somebody did a Golden Deed� which was followed by the Scripture lesson, the First Psalm, read by the President, Mrs. Luie Cline. Eleven members responded to roll call. The minutes of the previous meeting were read. The treasurer said that there was a balance on hand of $551.33. The following dues were received: Mrs. Luie Cline, fifty cents; Mrs. Sarah Lloyd, $2.70; Mrs. Janie Lloyd, $1.20. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned to met again in two weeks at the church.

The business meeting was held in the afternoon and was called to order by the President. Eleven members responded to roll call. The minutes of the previous meeting were read. The Sixty-seventh Psalm was read for the Scripture lesson and all joined in repeating the Lord�s Prayer after singing �We Shall See The King Some Day.� The following dues were received: Lucy Vandagrift, $1.00; Clara Grubb, $1.00; Anna Wilcoxon, $1.20.

The meeting was called to order by the President and was opened by all repeating the Lord�s Prayer. Eight members responded to roll call. The minutes of the previous meeting were read. $1.50 was received from Mrs. Anna Mellinger for quilting and $2.60 were received from Mrs. Melissa Brittin for dues. Previous to the business meeting, dinner was served by the ladies to the men who had volunteered to give a days work toward the repairs on the church building. Four visitors were present and assisted with the quilting that consumed the remainder of the time that day.

It was decided not to hold any more meetings during the month of Aug. Mrs. Mellinger invited the Society to meet with her, the first Wednesday of Sept. The meeting adjourned so that the ladies could quilt. The regular monthly business meeting of the Christian Ladies Aid Society was held in the afternoon, following a morning spent in quilting and a delicious repast at the noon hour. The meeting was opened by all singing �What A Friend We Have In Jesus,� which was followed by the Lord�s Prayer in unison. The 13th Chapter of Romans was read by the President. Mrs. Cordelia Conant became a member of the Society. The following dues were received: Mrs. D. Kincaid, $1.30; Mrs. A. Mellinger, .50, Mrs. E. Keefner, $.30; Mrs. M. Canterbury, $.75.

The meeting was an all day affair, with the business session in the afternoon. �The Touch Of His Hand On Mine� was the opening song. One dollar in dues was received from Mrs. Pearl England.

Fourteen people from Athens were in attendance. Fourteen members of the Cantrall Society were present, besides eight others who are affiliated with the local church. Chicken dinner was served at noon. The following short program was presented in the afternoon: �America,� Scripture lesson, 13th Chapter of I Cor., Jennie Longerbon; Lord�s Prayer, unison; song, �Tis So Sweet To Trust In Jesus�; Roll call; Minutes; Solos, �Little Mother of Mine� and �My Daddy�s Been A Mother To Me�, Mrs. Lane; song, �God Be With You Till We Meet Again�; benediction, Mrs. Morgan.

The regular monthly meeting was held at the church. Dinner was served at noon. Nine members and two visitors were present. In the afternoon, the business meeting was held which was opened by all singing �America,� after which the 67th Psalm was read by the President. The members joined in repeating the Lord�s Prayer. The following dues were received: Mrs. Pearl England, $.30; Mrs. Lucy Vandagrift, $1.00; Mrs. Clara Dunlap, $1.50; Mrs. Anna Mellinger $.50 + $.20; Mrs. Luie Cline, $1.00; and Mrs. Anna Wilcoxon, $1.20. It was voted to purchase the ten or twelve chairs of W. F. Cantrall and Mesdames Hurt and Luie Cline were designated to inquire the lowest price that Allen Mott would make on five dozen folding chairs. It was decided to hold the annual dinner on election day.

S. A motion was made and seconded, and carried, the officers which were chosen for 1923, serve during 1924.

The regular monthly meeting of the Ladies Aid Society was held at the church. The meeting was opened by singing �Jesus Is Calling,� after which I Cor. 13; 1-10 was read as a Scripture lesson by the President. The chair committee reported that 5 dozen folding chairs had been purchased of Allen Mott at a cost of $105.00. The treasurer reported that $20.00 was cleared at each election dinner held in April. The meeting adjourned to meet again May 31. No dues received.

The regular monthly business meeting of the Ladies� Aid of the Christian Church was held at the church. The 119th Psalm was read by the President as the Scripture lesson and this was followed by the Lords� Prayer. Mrs. Bertha Leckrine became a member at this meeting. The following dues were received: Mrs. Leckrone, $1.20; Mrs. Grubb, $1.20; Mrs. Phelan, $1.20; and Mrs. England, $1.00. The meeting adjourned to meet again the first Wednesday of October.

All repeated the Lord�s Prayer in unison. $1.70 in dues from Mrs. Keefner was received. The date for the annual chicken supper was set for Oct. 16. The following appointments were made, the rest of the work to be apportioned the day of the supper: Soliciting Com., Mrs. Mellinger, Jennie Longerbon, Lucille Conant, Marie Cline, Mrs. Grant and Mrs. Margie Canterbury; chicken frying, Mrs. Kincaid, Mrs. Mellinger and Marie Cline; potatoes, Mrs. Kincaid; gravy, Mrs. Hurt; decorating, Young Peoples� and Senior Sunday School Classes and Coffee, Mrs. Mellinger.
The first meeting of the year of the Cantrall Ladies Aid Society was held at the home of Mrs. Frank Wilcox with the members and two visitors present. A cafeteria lunch was served at noon. In the afternoon the business meeting was called to order by the President and opened by repeating the Lord'� Prayer in unison. After roll call the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Pres., Mrs. Louie Cline, Vice-Pres., Mrs. Anna Wilcox, Sec., Mrs. Clara Grant, Treas., Mrs. Anna Mellinger. A motion was made and carried that the Ladies Aid pay two hundred dollars on the minister�s salary. A motion was also made that the ladies of the Aid Society entertain their families at an oyster supper, Wed. Jan. 14. It was unanimously carried and the necessary plans made. The following dues were collected: Mrs. Mary Barr, $1.70; Mrs. Louie Cline, $.60; Mrs. Luie Brown, $2.10; Mrs. Cordelia Conant, $1.70; Mrs. Anna Mellinger, $.80; Mrs. Clara Grant, $2.80. Two new members were added, Mrs. Carrie Welker and Mrs. Inez Cantrall. Mrs. Cantrall paid dues $1.20 for ensuing year. Meeting adjourned to meet the first Wed. in February.

The men cleaned up the yard and tore down the old barn. In the afternoon, the business meeting was called to order by the President who also read the Scripture lesson. The Lord�s Prayer was repeated in unison. Sixteen members responded to roll call and dues amounting to $9.45 were collected. The meeting adjourned to meet again in two weeks at the church. The men to be in attendance also to finish work on trees.

The meeting was called to order by the President, and opened with a song and Lord�s Prayer. The following officers were elected: Mrs. Cora Alexander, President; Mrs. Maude White, 1st Vice-President; Mrs. Clara Grubb, 2nd Vice-President; Mrs. Clara Dunlap, Secretary; Mrs. Clara Grant, Ass�t Secretary; Mrs. Anna Mellinger, Treasurer; Mrs. Cordelia Conant, Ass�t Treasurer. Pearl England paid $1.50 dues and Maude White $1.00. Meeting adjourned to meet again after Christmas.
The Ladies Aid Society of the Christian Church met Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1926 at the church for an all day session. The day was spent in quilting. There being so little more to do on the quilt, Mrs. Alexander agreed to take it home with her and finish it. The business meeting was held in the afternoon. Opened by the President, Mrs. Alexander, reading the 13th chapter of Hebrews, 1-22 verses, followed by the Lord�s Prayer repeated by all. It being the first meeting in the year, the President appointed the following committees:

Report of the treasurer was made, giving a balance of $222.95 after all bills were paid. Moved by Mrs. Conant, seconded by Mrs. Cline, that all bills be allowed according to the Treasurer�s report. One member was added to our roll, being Mrs. Sarah Mallory. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned to meet in two weeks at the Church.

Motion was made and seconded that the President of this Aid orders material for ceiling and walls of the church basement, same consisting of wallboard and stripping. Mrs. Houston and Miss Maggie Strode were accepted as new members. Mrs. Clara Grubb paid $9.60 for the quilting of two quilts. She also paid $2.40 dues for herself and her daughter, Mrs. Phalen. Miss Maggie Strode paid one month dues, $.10. The Missionary Society returned $15.00 of the $25.00 that they had borrowed from the Ladies Aid. The Ladies Aid of the Cantrall Christian Church met Jan. 28, at the home of Mrs. Zellars. It was not the regular meeting date, but an all day meeting called for the express purpose of quilting. The husbands� were also present and all partook of a delicious lunch at noon. No business was transacted nor dues collected. It was decided to put the wall board on the basement the following Wed. Feb. 3-regular meeting day.
The Ladies Aid of the Cantrall Christian Church met Wednesday Feb. 3 at the Church all day. The ladies quilted and the men did carpenter work. Eight members and one visitor were present. The business was called to order by the President, Mrs. Alexander. Hymn-Onward Christian Soldier sung by all. The 13th Chapter of Corinthians was read by Mrs. Conant and the Lord�s Prayer repeated in unison. The roll was called and the following dues collected: Mrs. Cordelia Conant $.10; Mrs. Clara Grant $.70; Mrs. Dell Kincaid $1.00; Mrs. Anna Mellinger $.70; Mrs. Sarah Mallory $1.20-Total $3.70. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. The Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, Mrs. Mellinger reported three sales during the month of Feb. The sewing committee reported a quilt ready for sale. This quilt was pieced by the Pres. Mrs. Alexander and a vote of thanks was given her in appreciation of her work. The treasurer gave a report as follows on all business since previous report: Paid out $5.00 for flowers, $20.00 to Mr. Easterly, $69.45 for wall board, $6.15 for coal and $1.64 for merchandise, making a total of $102.24, leaving a balance of $152.31 in the treasury. Moved and seconded that all bills be allowed according to treasurer�s report. It was moved and seconded that Mrs. Alexander�s bill of $2.50 be allowed. Bill was then paid. The by-laws were read and motion made and seconded that they be adopted. Mrs. Keefner reported for the Social Committee and Mrs. Conant was appointed to take Mrs. White�s place temporarily.

The Cantrall Ladies Aid met Feb. 9 at the Church basement. The men nailed on wall board and the ladies quilted. Dinner was served at noon. No business was transacted, but Mrs. Welker�s dues of $1.20 were reported. Meeting again on Thursday for more work in basement and on quilt.
The Cantrall Ladies� Aid Society met Thur. 11 at the Church basement. The men worked on basement and the ladies quilted. Dinner was served at noon. The old stove in the basement was sold. It was decided to purchase a new one. No business meeting held. It was decided to meet the following Tue. To continue work.
The Cantrall Ladies Aid met Tuesday Feb. 16 to work on basement and quilt. Mrs. Anna Wilcoxin paid $1.20 dues.
The Cantrall Ladies Aid met Fri. Feb. 26 to work on basement. No quilting was done, but Church was swept and dusted. Men worked till their stock of material was exhausted and had to wait till more was ordered. Regular meeting day Mar. 3 to be next meeting.

Decided to have a meeting of the men to see about removing church property from taxable list. Motion carried to pay Mr. Easterly�s salary up to date. Closing hymn.

Ethel Kinkaid�s quilt was reported finished and $5.00 rec�d for same. (Table cloths reported made at previous meeting.) Net proceeds of supper $31.50. Bills paid-Mrs. Longerbon $.65-for abalastine $6.75-Mrs. Mellinger (stove) $5.00-varnish $3.20-chairs reported bought and received, $80.00. A chicken fry being planned to pay for chairs. Plans were discussed and Mrs. Cline was to have bills made by next meeting. Mrs. Conant paid dues $.50, Mrs. Wilcoxen paid dues $.60. Meeting adjourned.
