Alliance Chapter Projects - Commemoration of the Last Naval Battle of the Revolutionary War

John Paul Jones

Captain John Paul Jones

John Paul Jones (July 6, 1747 – July 18, 1792) was America's first well-known naval fighter in the American Revolutionary War. Although he made enemies among the American ruling class, and his career in the Continental Navy never saw him rise above the rank of Captain, his actions in British waters during the Revolution earned him an international reputation which persists to this day. During his engagement with Serapis, Jones uttered, according to the later recollection of his First Lieutenant, the legendary reply to a quip about surrender from the British captain: "I have not yet begun to fight!" The Alliance (for which Alliance Chapter is named) took part in the last naval battle of the war.

Chris Kahl, singer, wrote the song, "The Last Day the Cannonballs Did Fly" for this ceremony.

The "New Young Patriots" group from Ft. Lauderdale performed.

And, the Navy band played, of course!

The very impressive ceremony included the presentation of the wreaths. Each group had a person step forward and salute to honor the men who served aboard the USS Alliance.

And look what we picked up at the beach!

Alliance members spent Friday at Kennedy Space Center.
