REMINISCENCES OF GEORGE R. & CORA (MANNASMITH) WILSONS' FARM: By LUCILLE (WILSON) SARRETT (1917-1987) Dated: Sep. 01, 1985 The farm was down in a field near Coin, Iowa. Grandma's farm was sold to pay off debt. Grandpa WILSON owned home in field and had it pretty good and money in the bank. He bought the house up on the hill it belonged to Uncle WILL, after one of his sons tried to kill himself. Aunt Ruth (Wilson) POTTER took most of the things from the farm after death of Grandma & Grandpa. |
By LUCILLE (WILSON) SARRETT (1917-1987) Aug. 14, 1986
The farm was down in a field near Coin, Iowa. I spent lots of my summers there with KENNETH POTTER my cousin. I remember the cellar when storms were bad we went there. It was located Southwest of the house. The house was surrounded with lots of trees, pretty bushes and lots of flowers. They had a Bee hive in the back yard. We (Ermal & Vera Wilson) lived up on top of the hill from Grandma and that was where I got taken down by cows & they broke my arm, Daddy saved me. Then we moved to town & Daddy sold cars for Lisles. I still went to the farm in the summer, I was there when the Tornado hit Clarinda. We were living a 822 So. 16th. St. and the Tornado destroyed the house next to ours & took out our windows. Momma and rest of family and the four HUDDLE girls were in our basement. We could here the roar clear down to Coin on Grandma's farm. Daddy (1933) was hit by train on Highway 2, he hurt his arm very bad. We used to go on Sunday afternoon for a ride and one time we got hit by a car. All I could see was a deep, deep ravine, but a rut saved us. Boy I was scared, this was near Hamburg, Iowa. |
