Arloe W. Paul

Odebolt native Arloe W. Paul died Dec 14, 2005.  Went from errand boy to CEO of Allen-Bradley Co. in Milwaukee.  (See article at Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on-line.)

Paul went from errand boy to CEO of Allen-Bradley
By AMY RABIDEAU SILVERS
Posted: March 18, 2006

Back in 1933, when engineering jobs were nearly non-existent, Arloe W. Paul planned to work.  Instead, it became the only company he ever worked for - and he became its president and chief executive officer.
Services for Paul, better known as "Pappy," will be March 29, the same day that Allen-Bradley retirees hold their next meeting. Paul died of natural causes Dec. 14. He was 95.
Paul was born and raised in Odebolt, Iowa, then population 1,300 and the self-proclaimed "popcorn capital of the world." His grandfather was a farmer. His father was a heating and plumbing contractor.
Paul, however, wasn't interested in popcorn or plumbing. He wanted to be an engineer.  "I can't remember when I decided that's what I wanted to be," Paul said in 1967 as he was named president and CEO. "It seems like that was what I always wanted."
As a high school student, he began working summers for an electrical contractor. He next attended Iowa State University, earning a degree in electrical engineering in 1933.
"It looked like it was going to be impossible to get a job," he said. "I decided to be a patent attorney, and I planned to enroll at the University of Michigan in the fall."
In the meantime, Paul got an answer to one of his job letters. Fred F. Loock, later president of Allen-Bradley, didn't make any promises, but said they should talk if Paul was in the Milwaukee area.
Paul wanted to see the World's Fair in Chicago and managed to arrange a job interview on the same trip.  Promotions soon followed.
"Of the 131 who were graduated in electrical engineering in 1933 at Iowa State, only four of us found jobs as electrical engineers that summer," Paul said.
Of course, he explained, his first days were spent as more of an errand boy. Then he was assigned to help Lynde Bradley, company president, with a project. Paul next moved into the firm's training program.
His first real company job was working as a salesman in Cincinnati, where he stayed until 1947.
"We'd apply electrical control equipment to the machines, acting more like consultants than salesmen, especially for companies that didn't have an electrical engineer," Paul said.
Cincinnati was also where he met the former Frances Walker, whom he married in 1936.
As the company expanded, he was picked as manager for a new office based in Syracuse, N.Y. Other promotions followed. He was elected a director in 1962, and later named as one of the five trustees for the trusts that represented most of the Allen-Bradley stock.
When Paul resigned as president in 1970, Allen-Bradley was the largest employer in Milwaukee with more than 7,500 employees.
In little more than 60 years, "the company has grown from zero," Paul said in 1967.
"It's really a typical American story," he said. "It was started by two brothers, Lynde and Harry Bradley, and when Mister Loock came, he was one of the five or six men on the payroll.
"Where else could that type of success occur but in this country?"
During his years in Milwaukee, Paul was involved with the governor's Task Force on Waste Recycling, minority employment efforts by the National Alliance of Businessmen, fund raising for the Greater Milwaukee Open and as a member of the Milwaukee County Plan Commission. Paul also served on the board for M&I Bank.
His wife Frances died in 1977. He later married the former Mary Van Atta. They began living year-round at her home in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., by the late 1980s. She died in 1991.
"He was a nice guy - easy-going, friendly, generous to a fault - but he didn't tolerate fools very well," said son William Paul. "As long as you did your best for him, he was ready to give everybody the benefit of the doubt."
In addition to his son, survivors include stepdaughter Cornelia Baer and grandchildren.
The memorial service will be at 3 p.m. March 29 at Forest Home Cemetery's chapel, 2405 W. Forest Home Ave.
