Young Burt + Masson Battle

Family of Young Burt and Masson Battle

Young Burt [2] was probably the son of John Burt who died in 1780 in Chatham County, North Carolina.

The following deed involving Young Burt is found in Chatham County: [6]

p. 206 (bottom) - 1 May 1784 - Young Burt to William Dilard - 400 pds. - 208 a. beginning at a sweet gum by the River side.
Signed: Young Burt
Wit: Frederick Cobb, John Wood

Young Burt's wife was Masson Battle, a daughter of James Battle. [7]

In 1790 in Fayette District, Cumberland County, North Carolina, a Young Burt is shown with:

1 WM > 16, 2 WM < 16, 2 WF, 6 Slaves

During this time period he apparently also owned land in Wake County [7]:

Wake County Deed Book K, p. 339
State of N. C. grant #903 to Woodson Clements, Nov. 18, 1819, a tract of 104 acres on the Lick Branch and the drains of Lashleys Branch, waters of White Oak Creek, adjoining Lewis Barker, Gray Barker, Zachariah Wimbley, Young Burt, Abraham Barker, and Burwell Barker.

On 16 June 1839, Young Burt made his will [1], which specified the following:

- to my grandchildren the two sons and daughter of my deceased son James Burt five dollars each (reason already given property and money equal to the rest of my children)
- rest of property, land, slaves and stocks sold, proceeds to be equally divided between my son Pasquel B. Burt and his five sisters or their heirs.
Executors: son Pasquel B. Burt and Alfred Burt

This will was proved September 1847 and was recorded in Will Book C, p. 138 in Cumberland County.
