THE GARRETT LINE OF MERLE JONES

It is generally agreed that the Garretts are of Norman origin. The name dervies from "North Men" or people from the north, such as Scandinavians and the Vikings who conquered and settled Normandy, France. Men of the Garrett family, spelled "Gerrad" or "Gerard" at that time, followed William the Conquerer into England in 1066. In Normany, part of the Garrett service was to keep the signal fires lighted as a warning of contemplated attack by the enemy. Later, as permanent housing developed, the name became symbolic with the attics or lofts of houses, or from where fire signals were given.
The Garrett seat was Newberg, in the county of Berks, near the Windsor Forest, and Dorney in Buckinghamshire, 60 miles from London. From the early history of this family, the name was synonymous with "Torch Bearer."

5. Edward5 Garrett (Edward4, John3, John2, John1) was born August 31, 1733 in Fairfax Co, Va, and died August 24, 1794 in Laurens Co, SC. He married Ann West Owsley June 02, 1759. She was born 1744, and died 1823.

Edward had patriotic service in the Revolutionary War. He and Ann had 16 children.

6. William6 Garrett (Edward5, Edward4, John3, John2, John1) was born September 09, 1763, and died 1845. He married Nancy Ross 1788, daughter of William Ross. She was born August 21, 1766 in of Laurens Co, SC, and died February 09, 1847 in Laurens Co, SC.

William and Nancy lived and raised a family in Laurens Co, SC, in the Warriors Creek area. William was Captain of the Township in 1800. They had nine children.

Samuel lived in South Caroline in 1830 and, possibly, St Clair Co, Al, by 1840. Elizabeth Harris was formerly married to her cousin, Edward Harris. Samuel and Elizabeth lived in Franklin Co, Tn, before moving to Alabama. They had five children.
