OBITUARY - ROBERT BAKER - The University (University Place, Nebraska - now part of Lincoln, Nebraska)

The community was shocked Wednesday to hear of the death of Robert Baker, one of our oldest citizens. Uncle Robert, as he was familiarly called, will be greatly missed by his many friends. He was born in England, November 8, 1839. He came to the United States when 18 years of age. March 24, 1860 he was married to Miss Jane Leiff at Syracuse, New York. They located at Hinkley, Illinois in 1865 and in 1878 at Dorchester, Nebraska. Seven years ago he located in University Place.

He leaves besides his wife, three children: William Baker of Cambridge, Mrs. M.J. Walsworth of Lincoln, and Mrs. C. J. Buckingham of University Place; also fourteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers and one sister: William Baker of Clay, New York, Edward Baker of Sioux Falls, S.D., Richard Baker of Cortez, Colorado and Mrs. E. C. Phelps of Superior, Nebraska.

Mr. Baker has, for many years, been a member of the U.B. church. The funeral will be held at Dorchester Saturday afternoon. There will be short services at the home at 9:30 A.M. before starting for Dorchester. He was a charter member of the U.B. church 3 miles southwest of Dorchester, the church being on his farm. March 24, 1920, Mr. and Mrs. Baker celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. It was a grand occasion. Now he is gone and he lives the example of a good life. 2

There are other people in this site, for various reasons, some not related at all. Some are married into my family, some I once thought were related and, turns out, they are not.
