bullet  General Notes:

Patrick was sentenced to "life imprisonment"and transported to Australia aboard the "Atlas 2" which arrived in 1802 .His crime is not recorded but he may have participated in 1797 Irish Rebellion. His records state that he was 5'4"tall, had a ruddy complection and hazel eyes. He was sentenced in the Loughrea Court and was from County Galway.
He was in the convict gang which built the first road over The Blue Mountains in 1813. Thirty convicts and guard of 18 men Lt Hobby, assistant Richard Lewis, Chief Superintendant,John Tighe,John Burns and Samuel, servants and Cox .
As a result of this work he gained a Conditional Pardon on 5 June 1815 and in 1822 he was granted 50 acres of land at Melville on the Rope River near Penrith. In 1817 he was overseer to Sir John Jamieson. In 1822 he was a cattle driver for James Smithers of Pitt St. In Jan he was granted permission to drive cattle, inc 15 of his own to the Cow Pastures n County of ArgylelThe 1828 Census lists him as living at Melville with his family., which at that time is listed as Patrick, John, Michael, Philip,Mary Ann.
His family life is somewhat of a puzzle. He married his first wife Euphemia Young in 1816 at the Castlereagh church. They had by that time three sons. It may be that as he was a convict he could not marry until after his pardon. However the family was not to stay together. In the 1828 Census Euphemia is recorded as a washerwoman, living in Cumberland St Sydney with three children- James, Ellen, Frederick. It would appear that Euphemia had taken up with another man and Patrick with another woman, Catherine Hogan. There is a gap in his life in 1820's but it appears that he was in and out of jail a numberof times. He did not marry again until 1851.
The family left Melville and moved to the Campbell River area where he established his farm.
