General Notes:
His birth name was Marc and he was the son of Robert Guiscard, by an early marriage. The name Bohemund, the name of a series of princes of Antioch, afterward Counts of Tripoli. Bohemund was one of the leaders of the First Crusade, and served under his father in the great attack on the Eastern Roman Empire, 1080-1085. Later commander of the Normans in 1082-1084 into Thessaly, but was repulsed by Alexius Comneus. This hostility to Alexius had a great influence on his future career and is regarded as a help to determine the history of the First Crusade, and was regarded the leader. At the Siege of Antioch, Oct., 1097, he took a great part in beating off the Mohammedans at relief from the East. In 1100 he was captured; in prison until 1103. The Eastern Roman Empire claimed all his territories, supported in its claim by Raymond of Toulouse. He returned 1104 to Europe for reinforcements. His attractive personality won for him the hand of Constance, daughter of Philip I, King of France. He collected a large army and used it, not to defend Antioch, but to attack Alexius, but Alexius was aided by the Greeks, conquered and took his territories and Antioch. He was then a broken man, and died without going back to the East, and was buried in Apulia in 1111. Sources: Allstrom's Geneal.
